I saw a boxset at best buy that was definately a PD movie set and there were 3 Gamera films on it that were shown on MST. Two of them being Gamera and Gamera Vs. Gaos. I can't remember the other one though. The other one is probably Barugon, i got that for a buck at Wal-mart a few days ago. Yeah, the AIP-TV version War of the Monsters.

Maybe I'm wrong about this, but it seems like your new list is a lot more promising than the old list. Is there a reason for this? Yes, mostly because of my through research. The previous list made assumptions with movies involving Roger Corman, Bert I Gordon and Robert Lippert. The fact is, these directors/producers didn't usually get ownership of the movies. And negative assumptions in general. I don't think episode popularity has anything to do with Rhino's choices. It's also important to look at what DVDs have been released, and any VHS releases in the past (to find out who has, had or could have the home video rights). Just to be clear and so I don't look dumb, I didn't assume that directors automatically get the movies. I for some reason thought Gordon and Corman both had points in the original company. Plus I thought most of AIPs catalog would be with Sony (but they're with the Arkoff estate or Susan Hart), but I guess it was just the 70s portion. Corman WAS executive producer for some films (Deathstalker being one). Anyway, still good work here.

Wow just discovered this post. Very interesting and must have required a lot of work.
Warner didn't own Catalina Caper though? How did they lose the rights?
I think (guess) for Pod People and Cave Dwellers Rhino assumed Public Domain and nobody's said anything for ten years so they've stuck with it.

Isn't there possibly still a problem with all of the so-called Sandy Frank movies due to the English-language dub? For instance, Gamera's original U.S. release was by a film distributor (can't remember which one) in 1966. Their rights ran out after 20 years in 1986 (BTW, this version is the one getting PD releases), so Sandy Frank Entertainment acquired the U.S. rights and released their own version with their own English dub. This is the version MST3K used, so there are two possibilities I can see: (1) Even though Sandy Frank Entertainment doesn't have the rights to Gamera anymore, the dubbed soundtrack is their property, so unless it can be licensed from them, Rhino cannot release this episode (or any other Sandy Frank episode for that matter). (2) Once Sandy Frank's rights to Gamera expired, their rights to their dub soundtrack also automatically expired too, allowing the dub track to be released by anyone now. (This possibility seems reasonable given that the 1966 dub is getting the PD-like releases without paying anyone royalties.) Distributor-created dubs really seems to be a bit of a gray area in the copyright world. Sandy Frank only produced the dubs for GAMERA and GAMERA VS. ZIGRA, (and maybe for GAMERA VS. GUIRON). BARUGON and GYAOS used Daei's international dubs. Zigra didn't have a dub before this, since it hadn't received a US release. Also, the uncut version of the first Gamera did not have a dub. I think Daei at the time did not have a copy of the NTA release, hence why SF just created a new dub that (except for the beginning/end credits) synced up to the Japanese version. Wait, how many English dubs were produced for each of these? I have the Retromedia releases of Attack of the Monsters (vs. Guiron) and Return of the Giant Monsters (vs Gaos) and they're both different dubs from what Sandy Frank did.

I have the Retromedia releases of Attack of the Monsters (vs. Guiron) and Return of the Giant Monsters (vs Gaos) and they're both different dubs from what Sandy Frank did. Here you go: GAMMERA THE INVINCIBLE - original US theatrical version (with added scenes) GAMERA - Basically the uncut Japanese version (With the really crappy English actors) with SF's new dub. WAR OF THE MONSTERS - AIP-TV's edited dub version GAMERA VS. BARUGON - The uncut International dub version used by SF. RETURN OF THE GIANT MONSTERS - AIP-TV's dub version GAMERA VS. GAOS - The uncut International dub version used by SF. DESTROY ALL PLANETS - AIP-TV's dub version of "Gamera vs. Viras". GAMERA VS. MONSTER X - AIP-TV's dub version of "Gamera vs. Jaiger". ATTACK OF THE MONSTERS - AIP-TV's dub version. GAMERA VS. GUIRON - A different dub, though I'm not sure if it was a new dub, or another International one. GAMERA VS. ZIGRA - Sandy Frank created the only dub for this. I personally prefer SF's dub for GAMERA VS. GUIRON because it's just so amazingly awful (the AIP-TV one is much better), and easy to make fun of. "Your mother's donuts.....................are really good!".

I'm a huge fan of this thread. I just used it to decide which episodes I should get from skyroniter first, so I might kick myself a little less when vol. 11 comes out.

Travis:
About Zombie Nightmare, did Anchor bay release it in Europe through their Anchor bay UK Label? Also, Synapse recently released Rock n Roll Nightmare which was the same director, producer, and star so maybe Synapse has the rights now? Just throwing that out there, trying to help as much as i can lol.

1. What did that picture have to do with anything? 2. Posting hotlinked pictures is against the rules.

I think that Zombie Nightmare has to suffer from "It's a Wonderful Life syndrome." While the copyright for the movie may be easy to obtain, the rights to some of the songs (in ZN case, the Ace of Spades), may be harder to get.
