I've seen Citizen Kane listed a lot here...someone could write an essay on this phenomenon! Why have so many people not seen this movie? Or perhaps the better question, why should one watch "Citizen Kane"?

I shant write an essay, but I will repeat what I said in an earlier thread about this:
Being a movie fan, but not watching Citizen Kane is like being a music fan, but not listening to Sgt. Pepper.
Even if you don't like it, or even if you like other movies better, it's still the most influential film of all time, and you ought to see it.

Lighten up. It was a bit of friendly ribbing. No need to take it seriously. You're number one on the death list now, Winger. Peace offering

Could not agree more. I just can't stand movies that are pointlessly depressing or are depressing to show that life sucks sometimes....I live in the real world I already know this. I go to see movies to escape reality and lose myself in a story. I don;t want to come out more depressed than when I went in. Other movies that are an example of this other than Donni Darko: Ladder 49City of AngelsGod at the end of these movies I really, really wanted to huck someting at the screen I hated "City of Angels," but not because it was depressing -- it was just horrendously stupid, and not a patch on the German original, "Wings of Desire," which I adored. I found myself howling with laughter when Meg Ryan gets mowed down by a truck while doing the "look how free I feel, riding my bike with my eyes closed down a highway!!!" thing. JEEZ. I liked "Donnie Darko." I haven't seen "Napoleon Dynamite" either. Everyone I know has told me I HAVE to see it, but I have the unsettling feeling that I might not like it. I mean, I like quirky movies, but not ones that are self-consciously quirky, which this movie appears to be. That just pisses me off.

Casablanca. I've seen a lot of the classics over the years, but somehow this one slipped through the cracks. It's in my Netflix queue, so one day I will get to it.
Planet Of The Apes (original). I have this one on tape, but I haven't gotten around to watching it yet.
Titanic. I refuse to watch this one. The whole Jack & Rose romance doesn't interest me, and I absolutely hate the theme song.

I mean, I like quirky movies, but not ones that are self-consciously quirky, which this movie appears to be. That just pisses me off. Napoleon Dynamite follows the life of misfits. I think people like it because for once the hero isn't some stud muffin, he has fluffy red hair and wears moon boots, and the girl he "gets" in the end isn't a ho, she's a fanny-pak wearing geek who sells lanyards! I also think that people can relate to the movie because we all have family members or know people like the characters: chat-room obsessed brothers, uncles who live in the past, grandmothers who like to go ride ATVs, and next-door neighbors from Mexico. Having watched the movie a few times and once w/ commentary, I get the feeling they didn't make this movie to have it become famous. I think that was just a pleasant surprise. The movie was made as a way to perserve the memories of the writers' childhood. All the characters and scenes were loosely based on experiences the writers had as children growing up in Idaho. That being said, I wonder if "small town" folks enjoy it more than big city people, those who've spent their whole lives in LA or NYC. Any reactions to that? I spent part of my childhood in a town of 8000 in Montana, and I like this movie. I also wanted to comment on Donnie Darko. I like Jake G. and I thought he had some funny lines, about smurfs and Married With Children, and I liked that they had Watership Down in the movie...but the giant bunny creeped me out and I didn't really "get" the movie. It was trying to tell me something...but as to that something, I have no idea. Kinda the way I felt after watching V for Vendetta. Are we supposed to idolize the characters who cause destruction?

Well this thread did one thing - I don't know how famous it is, but if your a Christopher Guest fan and haven't seen "Best In Show", one has to ask themselves. "WHY?"
So I finally watched it and it was hysterical. A Mighty Wind is still my favorite, but this was great too.
I'd like to thank the author of this thread for reminding me get off my ass and get this disc for Pete's sake!

Citizen Kane...had the ending ruined for me It's the sled....uh OK It's more than a sled. It's what it means to Kane and how it represents the one thing he's really wanted all his life. Being an old guy who wishes life could be a bit happier, simpler; it's an idea that profoundly touched and spoke to me. It was also something lost on me when I first saw it at age 16.

I haven't seen Citizen Kane. I think I'm a bit intimidated by it, and want to make sure I'm really in the mood to watch "the greatest American film ever made". I'll see it someday.
I just saw Die Hard for the first time a couple days ago, and enjoyed it very much, more than I thought I would, which is probably one of the reasons I didn't see it for so long, I thought it wouldn't interest me. It's well-written and pretty sharp for a blockbuster action flick.

Way way way way too many to list. I haven't been to a movie theater since Indian In The Cupboard (seriously). I only like bad movies, really.

Blurry, if there's a revival house around you, watch for it. Seeing that film projected would be a GREAT way to see it for the first time!

Being a movie fan, but not watching Citizen Kane is like being a music fan, but not listening to Sgt. Pepper. Hmmm...some people would say Pet Sounds or Dark Side of the Moon or.... ....Zen Arcade or Skylarking or OK Computer or....
I feel another thread in the making...
But back to the topic, since Citizen Kane seems to be numero uno here i'll just say pick up the dvd you won't regret it.(hopefully) I'm kind of with emperorcupcake on this one, recent movie remakes and video game/television show retakes are not cinematic heaven for me. I'll take a below average Star Wars movie any day!!! The only movie that comes to mind for me (that is generally considered a classic by everyone) is Apocalypse Now. But I'm just waiting for the dossier version to come out.
