Even though I loathe both teams, I'm really looking forward to tonight's game. What I really want to see is another Lidge-Pujols matchup with the game on the line. And I want to see Lidge drill him in the back with a 98 mph fastball. Don't you think that would bring the confidence back to the 'Stros? (And actually, I like Pujols a lot- even though he wears the wrong uniform) What did the Astros do to inspire loathing? Belong to the National League? heh...

The Astros used to be innocuous, what with the orange rainbow unis and the warehouse/dome they played in. Then realignment brought them into the NL Central. Then they started winning. Not really winning, but winning enough to make the playoffs seemingly every year, where they would be thumped with regularity.
Then last year, they won like 50 games in a row to win (steal) the wild card that the Cubs had wrapped up in August.
So basically, they're a rival who make it even more difficult for the Cubs to make the playoffs (as if we didn't make it difficult enough). Granted, they aren't the historic rivals the Cardinals are, but they still suck.**
**in a derogatory way, not in a "win-loss" way.

They did it!!! The Astros are going to the World Series!!!! Roy Oswalt: Big Game Pitcher He shut the Cardinals down and any "momentum" they had right away. I've been rooting for them hard. They just never quit this season. I love Andy Pettitte, Roger Clemens and Oswalt, and I'm glad Biggio will finally be going to the World Series. It's going to be tough for me to decide who to root for. I really like both teams. I'm happy they came through. I'm just looking forward to enjoying some great baseball (as I already have).

Current results (how many correct picks & is pick for WS winner still alive):
Mr. Atari: 2 out of 6, no
crowfan: 3 out of 6, no
KGB: 4 out of 6, yes (Astros)
mummifiedstalin: 1 out of 1, yes (White Sox)
ehren: 3 out of 6, no
Ro-Matt: 2 out of 6, no
CFF: 2 out of 6, no
StreetDreamer: 4 out of 6, no
otr: 1 out of 1, yes (White Sox)
Melting Manos: 2 of 6, no
RaphaelH: 0 out of 1, no
skyroniter: 0 out of 1, no
Blurryeye: 5 out of 6, yes (White Sox)
DW: 3 out of 6, no
So Blurry has the lead. But KGB is still in the running. One point for each series winning pick. 3 points for the World Series winner. So even though Mummi & otr still have a team in the running, they weren't men enough to pick the other series, and can't get enough points.
I'm a bit disappointed that the Cardinals didn't lose in a more painful manner. But beggars can't be choosy. At least they're going home.

So no extra points for picking the pennant winners?

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy! Wow, I've actually got something riding on the World Series. Since the 'Stros kept my Phillies out of the post-season, I guess it would be good if they were responsible for procuring some MST for me.
As for extra points on the LCS, Blurry, never you mind! As official adjudicator of this contest, Herr Nintendo says that the World Series winner gets three points. That means it's down to us. Winner take all.

So no extra points for picking the pennant winners? Sure. You get a point each more than those who didn't pick them. Plus, this makes for a good head to head.

That's true, and it's all in good fun. Either way, if the Astros win, KGB wins. I'm going to be happy with whichever team wins. I'll just take my moral victory of picking both pennant winners and enjoy the Series.

So what do you win if you win? Besides the respect of your peers and well-wishers, a little research shows that there is a prize. From the very first post in this thread...

Mr. A, I have a question about the cubs, and I'm not being a smart-arse. . .
What happened to them that they fell off the face of the earth? I thought they'd be in the WS before the ChiSox would be. . .especially after that great NLCS with Florida. . .thoughts?

Mr. A, I have a question about the cubs, and I'm not being a smart-arse. . . What happened to them that they fell off the face of the earth? I thought they'd be in the WS before the ChiSox would be. . .especially after that great NLCS with Florida. . .thoughts? I could give you a funny answer, but since I'm a fan and a baseball nerd, I have a real one. There are a couple of theories... 1. Dusty Baker. He is scared to play young players, so he trots out mediocre veterans like Jose Macias every day. 2. Dusty Baker. He doesn't know how to manage a pitching staff, so he burns out his starters and ruins the confidence of his bullpen. 3. Injuries. Especially to Prior & Wood. See #2. Add Nomar & Aramis Ramirez to the list. 4. Prima-donna players. This is probably why they blew their 5 game wild card lead in 2004. Sosa and Alou stopped contributing and didn't like being told so. 5. Lower quality free-agents. As a result of #4, they rebuilt in 2005 with guys like Jeromy Burnitz and nobody. They also let Matt Clement go and replaced him with no one. 6. Dusty Baker. They couldn't hit left-handed pitching, they couldn't win at home, they couldn't advance runners or hit with men in scoring position, and while they beat the Cardinals and Astros all year, they couldn't beat the Reds or the Brewers. All of those things fall sqarely on the manager. If they pick up a good hitting outfielder, a top level lead off man, and a number 3 quality starter, they'll compete. If they do all of those things and replace Dusty with a new-school manager (like Florida just got in Girardi), then they'll make the playoffs again.

I'd jsut like to congratulate the Houston Astros in making it to the World Series.
I've followed them since the mid 80's and I can't be more happier (other than if the Twins or Pirates made it).
Go Astros

Being from Cleveland, I have to root for the Astros. Although I have to admit that the WSox are probably the better team and look to win it all. Dangit Tribe, freakin choke artists

I can't say I'm an Astros fan by any stretch, but I am definitely rooting for them against the team I loathe the most in MLB...The Chicago White Sox. I hope they get swept but I honestly don't see that happening. Congrats to the Astros for making it there, and to the White Sox for selling their souls (Oh calm down White Sox fans, I'm kidding.) to get there.
