I'm quite amazed at how many people criticize MST3K for certain films they selected. "Soultaker isn't that bad!" etc... I actually came across some ass bandit on the IMDb who stated that MST3K "had no business riffing on this, a choice running counter to their credo of ".....the worst we can find" (and it wasn't the first or last time, either).". This pompous windbag continues to brag how he saw Harryhausen in the flesh and the rest drones on like a bad high school essay. In his other self-serving 'reviews' he drags out all sorts of tired pseudo-intellectual jargon and sermonizes pretentiously on the merits of these great classics that no one else understands but he...(i.e. it is quite obvious that he is nothing more than a film student with a unfounded ego). The films seem most touchy about are the Ptushko flicks... but if these people "got" MST3K, they'd know that The Best Brains crew LOVE movies (hence the show)...and if they bash a film, especially respected foreign films that suffer from dreadful translations and have been hacked to pieces by , rest assured that they KEPT THAT IN MIND. Hence comments like "This guy isn't really Sinbad is he?" and jokes about the lack of continuity and lack of plot. Yet, check out the reviews for Morozko: actually, it's hardly a bunch of reviews, it's more like a message board flame war... I feel as if I should remedy this situation...and use some comments from the Episode Guide: 422 - The Day The Earth Froze (Sampo): [glow=red,2,300]"Beautiful and exceptionally well-produced Aleksandr Ptushko film..."[/glow] [glow=red,2,300]"...stunning photography and special effects..."[/glow] 505 - The Magic Voyage Of Sinbad (Sadko) [glow=red,2,300]"unbelievably well shot and beautiful"[/glow] 617 - The Sword And The Dragon (Ilya Mourometz) [glow=red,2,300]"Both films feature some really great sets and puppets. The wind demon with his creepy features and huge cheeks, is a lot of fun. The vast northern settings and massive white castles are gorgeous."[/glow] These are probably the only positive lines referring to MSTed movies I've come across in the episode guide.

What actually got me to start this thread was this: I came across like, the millionth "What a are the ten best/worst films you've ever seen?" threads on the IMDb and one guy actually listed (in his bottom 25):
"15)Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie (1996) (If they intended to make a bad movie they were really succesful!)"
Ha ha ha...IF THEY INTENDED! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA... how clever. I'm willing to bet this is no MSTie and certainly someone who isn't even aware that there was a television show. Why am I so sure? Here are some other comments:
"13)Nice Dreams (1981) (Maybe it would have been fun if I was smoking hemp while watching it.) "
Uhhhhh...having a headache would have been fun? What an ignorant dipshit. "Hemp"? Man, I don't think I've ever come across anyone who thinks marjuana is the same as hemp (except the U.S. gov't).
and this frightening line:
"4)8MM (1999) (A whore was murdered. Who cares? Only Cage's character.)"
Okay, I hate Cage and I haven't seen this film and I'm sure it blows, but the "Who cares that a WHORE was murdered?" line disgusts me. Who is this idiot? Some puritan nazi? This disregard for human lives, as based on their social milieu, coupled with the "hemp smoking" line with the general "I don't like movies about people who do drugs or drink. People who do drugs and drink are losers" (i.e. the Doors and Leaving Las Vegas-two movies I also dislike, but for non-puritan reasons)...makes me think this person might be a little right wing...just a bit.

There's a great line, I think in a late season 2 episode, where Crow is crying about the situation he's in, and he says in tears... "I haven't even seen a Kurosawa film!"
That great line sums it up. Yeah, you know. I like some of these. In a cheap, cheesy way "Amazing Colossal Man" is fun and I can relate to the bitchng Glen. And I love the Russo/Finnish productions... BUT THESE AREN'T KUROSAWA! Or Billy Wilder or John Ford or anywhere near spitting distance from anything close to brilliant. So keep it in perspecive!!
#2: Why is it that I love Nirvana and "Nevermind" is a CD that I adore and listen to constantly. BUT I was still able to laugh at Weird Al's mocking rendition of "Teen Spirit"? Could it be I'm balanced, able to have some FUN and can seperate the two. (And unlike MST, Weird Al has torn up some GREAT artistic works).
WHY Should film be exempt from Parody? Do these clowns write "Mad Magazine" when they put down better films than MST ever hoped to roast? Do they slam Blly Crystal for singing funny songs about the best picture nomanees during the Oscars?
IF NOT Then I gotta wonder why they are sooo thin skinned about MST?

It's funny that you chose to mention Kurosawa, as I honestly believe that he is the greatest filmmaker of all time. Okay, that alone is not 'funny' but I've often stated that, if they could riff on a K flick, I'd be 1000% behind it.
To the fools: It isn't always about how BAD a film is.

Joe Dante and Dennis Miller criticized MST3K for making fun of an edited version of "Marooned" in 401 - "Space Travelers". I don't think it's as bad as some of the other films that appeared on the show, but that still doesn't make it a good movie in my opinion. I wonder what they see in that film.
Share and Enjoy, _Ford_Prefect_

I was going to mention Space Travelers and This Island Earth in my original post and I'm sure there are others... but are all these people taking the theme song literally? I mean it does end with repeat to yourself it's just a show and you should really just relax....
GAH! There should be an addendum for the IDIOTS that says "remember it's just a theme song not a goddamned manifesto so shut up!".
Everything's game. The so-called Russo-Finnish Troika was selected because those films were hilarious in their butchered, poorly translated state and coupled with the fact that they are trippy as hell, makes them great MST-fodder. All these people should wake and unplug their head from their asses and realize that THEY WERE ONLY MAKING FUN OF THE BAD VERSION AND IF BEST BRAINS HAD TAKEN THE ORIGINAL CUT & FILM PRINT WITH THE ORIGINAL LANGUAGE AND MADE FUN OF IT, THEN AND ONLY THEN WOULD HAVE A CASE.
BLAGHH!

The Brains could riff on Lord of the Rings for all I care...I have a thick enough skin to understand that it's just a show, and it's only for the sake of comedy.

Look, if you take movies so personally that a couple of puppets and a meathead making fun of a movie pisses you off, then I suggest you try point a gun at your forehead and pulling the trigger: you'll make the world a better place for the rest of us.

I agree. Heck, I'd love it if they suddenly decided to riff on the Lethal Weapon films, Big Trouble in Little China and Killer Klowns from Outer Space, all films I think are great.

Read this about Wild Wild World of Batwoman: "jevan003 Australia
Date: 16 March 2003 Summary: Subtle but not without insight
This movie is an interesting exposition of the human condition. Despite the unfortunate title, this movie has little to do with the DC comic. This is a more serious movie, although there is a concrete 'superhero' metaphor. (You really have to watch and UNDERSTAND the movie understand this) As demonstrated on this site, I think most people will miss the subtlety of this film, and the issues of deep human psychy that it deals with. Unfortunately, in order to pursue these theames, the film makers were forced to make some concession in terms of the continuity and the addition of scenes which are really pointless in terms of the overall plot. A cinamatic masterpiece, but for the reasons above, often critercised and agrivating to the less knowledgeable."Yeah, right... to jevan003> I suppose Batwoman was a symbol for pointlessly confused mother flapjacksers like you. Just because a movie sucks doesn't mean it's a masterpeice of pure brilliance. As for less knowledgeable, you're the kind of person if I took a poopie on a plate and gave it to you for $98, you would buy, eat it, and say that it was delicate and misunderstood for its horrible taste and smell. I hate you so much! Sorry about that. I've been waiting to show you that and vent myself.

I must agree most of these people complaining about a certain movie they liked getting riffed by Mike/Joel and the bots need to calm the hell down. I mean I consider Empire Strikes Back to be one of my favorite films but I wouldn't get super protective over the film and curse the show if they decide to riff it. Also here is an excerpt from a review on Soultaker
The trashtalkers would NEVER admit it, no matter what kind of logic or reasonable points you make, because they're all trekkie type MST3K nerds. For those of you who aren't nerds and need an explanation, MST3K is the now defunct Mystery Science Theater 3000 which cuts movies up they somehow are able to get the rights to and trash talk all the way through. Sometimes funny, sometimes stupid, but always juvenile and dumb
Probably a joke review but in the off chance that it isn't then this guy is really a pompous moron. Oh yes all the people who like MST3k are a bunch of so called nerds who don't know good cinema when they see it and that Best Brains were really juvenile for tearing up this piece of Oscar award winning material. How dare they violate such a profound piece of art.

Gah,SoulTaker was SOOOO cheesy, and the riffing on it was great.People like them really should take advice from the theme song in a different form of itself "It's just a show,I should really just relax".

There's not a subject or person or art form that hasn't been parodied or made fun of in some way throughout history!
So, it's okay for SNL or Python to make jokes at the expense of Jesus, Gandhi and Mother Teresa, It's okay for South Park to tease Terrorist and Osama.
It's okay for the late night talk show hosts to rip into Kings and Presidents
But it's not okay to make fun of Soultaker?
Is it just me or do these people have a screw lose somewhere?
Someone please explain to me how a B-Movie deserves an exemption but Jesus (or whoever) doesn't? I can't wrap my brain around that logic.
