Have you ever had a disappointment like this? Oh, sure. I've tested MST3K on many people; some love it, and some just don't get it.

Honestly I'm not sure about the specific legalities (if anyone knows please speak up), but for some reason I'm convinced that the Mike and the bots stuff isn't a problem. Playing a song in the background and having a character sing it are two different things, but if the Simpsons thing is really a problem... Ahh hell I don't know anymore.
Don't mean to turn this into a Weird Al discussion but...It doesn't? I thought all of Weird Al's songs would be protected as a parody (though he does get permission for all the songs otherwise he wouldn't be able to make money off of them).

Yeah, that sounds familiar. I'm pretty sure they never sung more than that of any song.

But Joel/Mike and the 'bots quote songs several times an episode. Did Rhino really have to secure rights to those songs for all the episodes released on DVD? !

for example, 904- Werewolf, would rhino have to clear all the song lyrics that were used by mike and the bots durring the end credits? Nah. To my knowledge no riff could be considered infringement. The singing I think would be protected as a parody or because it wasn't sung for more than a certain amount of time or something.

Is your classification of Revenge of the Creature (and the other Universal eps) as extremely unlikely based soley on this "grudge?" I know Universal/Gramercy did some stupid things in regards to MST3K:TM, but surely if there's one thing we can say with certainty about major studios it's that they speak through numbers without being personal. I'm sure if the price was right, they'd gladly allow Rhino to release it. Not saying that will happen, but I wouldn't think Universal cares enough for or against BBI to prevent an episode from being released based soley on the feature film's behind-the-scenes tension. Screwing with film makers' visions is business as usual with studio executives.

I'm pretty sure that BBI or Jim has no real say over what episodes are released/distributed. Jim Mallon more or less is BBI, and I guaruntee you that BBI has control over what's going on, considering they're, ya know, the company that owns MST3K. Rhino can do absolutely nothing without BBI's consent.

I just watched Reefer Madness and damn am I pissed. Mikes commentary is just fine, really very amusing but to have to watch the crappy colorized hackjob is too much to ask. I remember when colorized movies started to show up on TV. I'd flip through the channels, stop on a terrible looking movie and look it up in the TV Guide and it would say, as they used to, “colorized version.” It was always obvious. And damnit, it still is! I can't believe that the technology hasn't advanced at all. Legend Films and Barry Sandrew, you should be ashamed. Restoration is one thing but what you're doing is no less than vandalism. If this is what I can expect from Carnival Of Souls and The Three Stooges I'll pass. Doesn't the DVD contain the original B&W version as well?

Josh really does shine in the KTMAs because of his knack for ad-libbing. Too bad he didn't like the show's begin scripted...

It "might" become a collectors item. I have the same problem. How would an incorrect box printing ever be a collector's item? Do you really think Rhino will correct it?!

I've gotta go with Bill Corbett on this one as well. By mid 8th season Crow was at full force. It's just something about his voice and his delivery that really makes me laugh. He's got that constant, lovable sarcasm that just seems to always work.

I think I'm one of the few longtime fans who actually prefers the Sci-Fi eps. GASP! Hopefully all sets from now on will be mixed, but what with the rights situation, we can't always have what we want.

I think I prefer Final Justice, but Mitchell should definately be viewed first because of all the references.

I completely understand and agree with your views on replacing your old tapes. I'd love to get rid of all my tapes as well, but you never know when something like this will happen. I'd just like to make it clear to everyone that I certainly notice the darkness issue with both Merlin and Time Chasers on Rhino's newest boxed set. I'd also like to make it known that I'm not trying to defend Rhino. I initially entered this discussion trying to prevent a rampage against RHV, resulting in discouragment and a lack of future releases. My original point is becoming weaker and weaker, especially after re-watching the DVDs (it really IS dark! ). I'm not trying to get people to accept less than good quality from Rhino...but I suppose I found people complaining about the darkness to be stupid compared to the constant pixellation I experience with every DVD. Anyway, while we're on the topic of Rhino's problems, I'd like to point out the issue of bitrate. Am I the only one who notices that they use single layered disks (not even the whole thing!) to encode the episodes? When Rhino decided on one episode per disk, you'd think they'd at least max out the bitrate! As it is, they could easily fit like three episodes on one of those discs with the exact same quality that they are now. I've just found that a bit annoying since the first release. Every trace of digital artifcating could probably be cleared up if they used the DVD space to its fullest potential. Then again, it could be Rhino making bad transfers. This is certainly a confusing and bothersome situation, isn't it?
