So I'm a liar? Let me make something very clear so we don't have any misunderstanding. When I say something like this, it is the truth. You've crossed a line with me, seriously. You want to have a difference of opinion that's fine. But don't ever imply that I'm lying or making something out of whole cloth. Yes, when I pop in my video I can clearly see M&TB. And that's the bottom line. That's what we have been discussing from the point of the discs release. Whether or not the images on the screen are easy to see, and the images on my Video are clean and easily discernable.. Woah, woah. Don't turn this into something it isn't. I'm not trying to insult you in any way, and I wasn't implying that you were lying. I'm implying that you're using the darkness issue as a way of saying that your tape is somehow of "better quality" than the DVD, which I whole-heartedly disagree with, and will now try to explain. Friends? If you truly believe that your VHS copy is better than a Rhino DVD, then you must have some sort of magic tape. Any DVD is technically of better quality than any VHS tape because of the added lines of resolution. You say your tape is of "better quality" because you can see the theater seats during the opening credits. Well, I guess that depends on your meaning of quality. It sounds to me like the DVD is a simple case of a darkness/brightness screwup. Rhino's DVD is considerably darker than the broadcast, yes, but in terms of actual video quality? I would indeed like to see your VHS tape if it is truly better. I agree that you should be able to see Mike and the 'bots, and I agree that, in terms of brightness, our VHS copies are more pleasing to the eye in many respects. However, I feel that you can't just use the VHS tape's brightness as an excuse for saying that VHS is better than DVD, which is never true.

I'd love to see this better quality VHS tape of yours.

I understand what you're saying, but they're not putting crap in a box. They could be doing much worse.

I've checked my tape too, and I hear no difference between it and the DVD.

It must be my setup, because pixellation is present throughout the entire episode, including host segments. Obviously the host segments look better than those washed out movies, but the digital artifacts are present throughout the whole presentation. And this is for all of Rhino's DVDs.

The pixellation or the darkness issue?

That's what I'm saying...I think there are some profanity cuts that BBI makes from the very beginning...and then there are rare cuts like I guess in what happened with Boggy Creek II that BBI left in and Scifi edited for TV.

Hmm, I guess Satellite News will have plenty to put for the "Rhino Screwup" part of their DVD descriptions!
So what's this with profanity being edited back in? I'm wondering...I'll bet a lot of profanity is cut out in the master tape itself, because BBI may know that they can't leave it or, better yet, Mike and the 'bots will make fun of it. Which part of Boggy Creek was this?

We don't want all kinds of MSTies pssing off Rhino Home Video because of an "error" that we can't really back up. As I stated, the darker image for merlin and time chasers may have been intentional. We don't have access to BBI's original master tapes, so the least we can do is give Rhino the benefit of the doubt before flooding their e-mail with complaints and discouraging them from future MST3K releases. Yes, broadcasts versions of those episodes were indeed a little "brighter" and allowed you to discern the theater seats during merlin's pitch black credits background, but TV broadcasts are tinkered with in terms of brightness/contrast/color. I've viewed volume 5 on numerous setups and have found varying results with each, some brighter than others. And it's not like you can't fiddle with your screen options for your television, either. It's certainly a possibility that these episodes purposely look this way. I'm surprised no one has complained about the constant pixellation or loss of detail that I have experienced with all of Rhino's DVD releases. Since no one has ever mentioned it, I assume it's my crappy setup.

Thanks for checking so quickly, otrfan! I was just able to try the disc on a different system and can confirm that the sound is indeed there. Sorry I even brought it up, everyone!

Hey, guys. I was just watching my DVD of Time Chasers from the newest collection. I was watching the great host segment where Mike goes to visit Pearl in the Widow Maker and the two share some quality time. There was a problem, though. On my VHS tape (from Sci-Fi channel), when Pearl notices Mike coming, there is a futuristic door-opening sound when Mike exits the SOL. The DVD does not have this sound. I checked my VHS tape just to make sure, and sure enough it was there. Now before everyone goes crazy, would anyone mind checking on their end as well? I don't exactly have a good setup, and it may very well have something to do with my sound configuation. I'm doubtful, though, since Rhino's sound transfers are in mono. It could be that the sound wasn't mixed in by Rhino, or the tape BBI sent didn't have it for some reason. If this is so, I wonder what else is missing from all of the DVD transfers.
So please, someone who also has volume 5 check this out for me. Thanks!

I posted awhile back that Rhino made an MST3K site that Satellite News now links to when they mention Rhino Home Video. I find it odd that the day Vol. 5 is released Rhino still doesn't link to this section on the main site. Any comments?

Hey, at least the show can make fun of stuff like that. For instance, we often see Mike's microphone on his head while he's in the theater. In the segments of Prince of Space where Mike is a small robot, they actually put the microphone on the robot too!
