I believe the Netflix Twitter announcement has given us our first look at the new 'bot designs, right? The first thing that jumps out to me is that Gypsy is hanging from the ceiling! I wonder if she's on some sort of track that will slide around and lower down. Certainly seems easier to manage than a suit you have to wear. Here's Servo compared to his old design: - One of his fins is tilted. Did they bump it while taking the photo, and no one noticed? - His shoulder sockets are now angled. - His arms are obviously longer and more rounded. To me this makes him look stouter. - Does the bottom barrel of his head seem slightly wider? Crow seems to have the biggest changes: - His arms are now double-barreled. It's interested that Joel kept the same parts but doubled them up, rather than completely redesigning then. Makes it almost hard to notice at first glance. - His arms also seem to by default be hanging down. I'm curious if this was just for staging the photo. - His hands are the same design, but are significantly bigger than before. It seems likely that this is to help him grasp things, as Joel has suggested he'll be doing now. - I always have a hard time judging his paint color due to the lighting. It seems more gold than before, but the lighting during the Sci-Fi era also made it look pretty gold. Overall there are some interesting changes. It would have been easy to make some small aesthetic adjustment that totally changed their feel, but it looks like that didn't happen. As it stands, Tom just looks fatter and Crow's arms and hands are huge!

Look at Joel and Servo's heads in the theater segments of the Rhino release - there's some scan lines present. Maybe Shout tried to deinterlace or detelecine, and it caused the drop in quality.
As interesting as this is, I'm not personally bothered by it. Both Vol 3 releases are close enough in quality for my tastes.
In fact, it's kind of funny discussing this given the terrible quality of many of the movies they used, and the low budget feel of the host segments. MST3K was the antithesis of high quality visuals. That said, it's definitely still interesting to see the differences between releases.

I found a copy of the Rhino DVD. Here the comparisons. The Rhino release really is better.

Those screen shot comparisons make it look better than it actually does in motion. The Rhino DVD is much sharper. The Shout! DVD uses the same transfer that's up on the Vimeo On Demand site (that version has a lot of blank space left in where the commercial breaks are supposed to go for some reason). Before Vol. 3 was re-released I made a custom DVD of the digital version (with the blank parts edited out) and that looked really similar to the official DVD. Interesting. Now I want to find a copy of the Rhino Vol 3 DVD so I can do some comparisons. There's one on eBay for $50 but that's a bit steep since I have the re-release. I'll keep my eyes open.

I have it. It's not the best transfer but it's not that bad. Here are some screencaps I made:

In the latest Revival League Podcast, Joel says that the bots now have dedicated puppeteers while Baron and Hampton do the voices with remotes controlling their mouths. This allows the bots to have more freedom to point, grab things and move around. He also mentions that they built the theater set differently this time to allow for more freedom of movement. It's on some type of scaffolding rather than on the floor. So that, combined with the remote voices, will allow Servo and Crow to move around more easily when they need to in the theater. I wonder how precise the remotes will be for the bots' mouths. Crow's beak always had a pretty wide range of opening, as well as speed at which it could be opened.

It was announced on September 26th that production had started. Joel tweeted on October 9th that "principal photography" had been completed. I assume this means the host segments, as I recall it being announced that the theater segments were done prior. It seems that the entire season's theater segments were shot back-to-back. Then all the host segments were filmed the same way, and in less than 2 weeks. How was the original run filmed? Like this, or one episode at a time?

I just popped in the blu-ray and could not get the closed captions to work.

I thought they said they'd send out the free episodes before sending out the codes. Did I imagine that?

For those interested, Trace Beaulieu did an interview tonight with Radio of Horror. It was about an hour long and covered a variety of topics, but at one point he was asked about the reboot. He said that he received a "very nice offer" to appear on the show, but that he turned it down. He did not elaborate on why he turned down Joel/Shout's offer. He was then asked about the new cast, and he said that there are some folks who think that he wishes ill will, but he said that is not the case, and that he wishes the new cast all the best. He talked a little about Felicia Day and mentioned that he liked Jonah Heston. He sounded very polite, the interviewers moved on, and the reboot was not brought up again.

From the latest Rifftrax email:
As we all presumed, but it's still interesting to see it confirmed.
No one just gives away money, so I wonder why Shout is doing this? Presumably they're getting something in return.

The current theory is that Jonah Ray is the new host, and Felicia Day is the new mad. Not confirmed though. Apparently there will be videos over the next few days announcing the cast.

Shout deserves it. They've treated the franchise with a ton of respect. Food for thought: now that Jim and Joel have been bought out, Shout now has full control over the KTMA episodes. It might mean nothing, but if it means anything then SQUEE. Good point! I hadn't considered this. Very interesting...

That's very clever! How did you make those? Photoshop on one screen with the old grainy logos on the other. The 1991 logo was the only one that took some time since I had to make the cartoon turkey from scratch. I found the old Comedy Central logo on Google and just had to color correct it a bit. Someone took the 1993 logo, updated it and put it on shirts! I was thinking about getting one... link hereNever seen this before but I somehow ended up using they same turkey as they did. Weird.
