And from what I understand, Joel, Mike, Trace, Kevin, Frank, Mary Jo, Bridget, Bill, and Josh want nothing to do with Jim for one reason or another. Wow, that stinks. I wish I'd never stopped by mst3kinfo.com I wish I'd never heard about all of this. Jim is free to do what he pleases with something he owns, but... I just never expected MST3K to fall into line with all of the other intellectual property revitalizations that have been going on over the past few years. Or I at least figured it'd be given the love and the care that its fans have shown to it over its lifespan (like the Variety ad we ran), and not brought back as some "fairly easy to animate" cartoon with almost none of the original talent working on it. Sad times we live in when even MST3K is brought back to make a few bucks.

Hey guys. Long time fan here - I check mst3kinfo.com every few months just to see what the guys are up to, and I just heard about mst3k.com and Jim's new project.
Let me say this: I've never let go of the show. Never. I still watch a short every week or so and a full episode at least once a month. I've gone through phases where I haven't watched it for a few months, but I always come back to it. And to be honest, this new venture bothers me. Man... I know I'm coming into this thing so late, and I'm sure what I'm saying has been said a thousand times, but as someone who's followed this show for an eternity, I have to speak my mind.
So, why bring it back now? Without Kevin and Bill or Trace doing the voices it feels so empty. The animated shorts were amusing - I can tell the humour is there. I just don't understand why Jim decided to bring the bots back to do this, without other key members' support. I know he owns the rights, but... I don't know. Why resurrect them in this fashion? I can only state my own personal opinion - and that's all this is - but to me, it feels wrong.
Secondly, has this been asked: if Mike, and Kevin, and Bill, and Trace, and Joel, and Frank, and Jim and all of the guys want to do this so badly - then why don't they do MST3K again? Because there's no network that would run it? I'm genuinely curious. If all of the guys have the resources to do these separate projects, and two of those are basically MST3K, then why don't they go back to what works? I don't understand.
I guess I just feel like I'm losing something sacred.

Cocopjojo, Very nice rejoinder. Hope I didn't sound dismissive before. You make a compelling point. RAD No, you didn't sound dismissive. I honestly feel bad because I've done nothing but criticize since I've been brought here by the MST3K.com announcement. Like everyone else here, the show is something sacred to me and unfortunately that causes me to be hypercritical of anything similiar to, or claiming to be, MST.

Really? You know a lot of MST3K fans that don't care a bit about CT, RiffTrax, or MST3K.com? I hope your argument for resurrecting MST3K isn't based on this premise, because that seems a very fickle fan-base, in my estimation. RAD Sorry, I probably should have elaborated. My father, for example, buys all of the DVD box sets at Christmas every year - he's been into the show since it first aired on the Comedy Channel. I've mentioned the Film Crew, Rifftrax, and even Cinematic Titanic and he's never shown any interest in them. Likewise for some guys I went to college with that used to watch the show. There's something about the silhouettes at the bottom of the screen and the puppets-and-strings feel that the show had to it that I know would draw these people back were it to be revived. Just like Jon Stewart mentioning Mystery Science Theater on the Daily Show the other day, there are lots of people that remember the show, that loved the show, but haven't paid any attention to RiffTrax or Cinematic Titanic. It's less about the fanbase being fickle and more about the name, Mystery Science Theater 3000. www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=203975That's the "The 'Bots Are Back!" thread on a forum I frequent. A lot of the responses are expected: "most misleading thread title evar," or "dissapointment-ton." Seventy-four responses. A lot of people in there know about Rifftrax and CT, but when you look at those projects' respective threads, the discussion dwindles. The CT thread had only nine responses before it died. The Rifftrax thread did better (but still not as good as the MST3K.com thread), but hardly any of it was actual discussion amongst people who had purchased anything. That's what I meant when I said "a lot" of people. When the name MST3K is brought up, everyone perks up - they remember the show, so they pay attention to what's being said. When they discover that "the guys who did MST3K are doing a new project," some look into it and some don't. But if they were to hear "Mystery Science Theater is coming back!" almost all of them would pay attention - just like the "The 'Bots Are Back!" thread having ten times the amount of discussion that the "MST3K Writers' Cinematic Titanic" thread had.

Alan hit it on the head.
I just don't get it. These projects take money. CT, Rifftrax, the MST cartoons - they cost Joel and Mike and Jim and everyone else money to produce. And they're making them because they're good at it, and they want to make money. I don't understand why everyone wouldn't want to pool their resources and unite under the MST3K banner - and doing so, gain a massively dedicated fan base. It's impossible to believe that they have more fans now than they would as a reunited MST crew. Not to mention the massive press that would come along with "the (actual) Return of Mystery Science Theater 3000!"
We don't need brand new host segment setpieces every week like in the Sci-Fi era. We don't need ten Tom Servos singing a choral song together. Heck, we don't even need a jib arm that can give us neater camera shots. A Deep 13 set, the bridge of the SoL, and the theatre seats and chroma key effect. Yes, that stuff would cost money, but they'd be reuniting a massively dedicated fanbase, and pooling their efforts into one project, rather than three separate projects each vying for the remaining MST fan base.
How much money did we raise for the Variety ad? I don't remember exactly how much, but it was a lot. I don't have any doubt that, given a few months, the remaining MST3k fanbase could raise together some money to help front the project (recreating setpieces, rebuilding bots, etc.). An MST3K.com with a video from Joel, Mike and the 'bots explaining the situation and how it's possible for MST3K to come back on the air... it would do a world of good towards helping the guys get this thing started.
I know a lot of Mystery Science Theater fans that don't care a bit about CT, Rifftrax, or the not really MST, MST3k.com. But I know that they would care greatly were Mystery Science Theater to actually be revived.

They were attached, with just a black mesh thing seperating the two sides when the iris was opened. There's a pic somewhere of Joel's departure in 512 where he's looking through the hexfield at the set, but I can't remember where to find it. I would love to see that. Anyone have it?

Here's something I've always wondered about:
In season 4 during the theme song line "he'll have to sit and watch them all," there is a shot of Godzilla sliding on his tail, with Joel guiding him in like a plane. In seasons 1-3, it was the giant eyeball. The Godzilla shot appears to be from 212: Godzilla vs. Megalon. That exact scene is shown twice in the movie (J&TB laugh about it being used twice), but neither time does Joel do the hand motion shown in the opening credits in season 4. So where did the shot shown during the theme song come from?
Has anyone ever noticed this? Is it just an alternate take or what?
