I have an idea...why don't they RENEW their ownership of these movies? I mean, who would want to actually OWN these movies beside Rhino? I'm sure all of the old volumes peaked in sales long ago. It's probably not worth the money. Whatever you think of the movies, the rights owners still want to be paid for loaning them out.

For those of you concerned about Volume 3, I wouldn't worry about it unless you're attached to Sidehackers. I mean, I'm sure they'll find a way to release the remaining two movies from the set on their own. (The third disc is Shorts Vol. 2, I believe.) If you have to prioritize, go for Volume 1, in my opinion.

So once they're out of print, we can go back to trading broadcast copies, right?

How do you lose rights to something you own? Rhino owns these titles don't they? If they lost them, that means they sold them doesn't it?

Rhino only permanently owns rights to a few of the movies they've released: Wild World of Batwoman, The Crawling Hand, and maybe a couple others. They buy the rights from whoever owns the video rights to each of these movies and eventually they expire, so I'd second the idea that it's probably not profitable for them to renew them. These sets just aren't good sellers compared to the other sets and for them it would probably be better to spend the money to get more unreleased episodes out.
I don't really envy their job since it's probably hard in many cases to track down the rights holder. For some movies the rights change hands a lot because the company that owns it goes under and it gets bought up by some bigger company who maybe also goes under and some of these corporations don't even know what they own.

The same thing happened to The Brains while the show was on the air. That's why some episodes eventually phased out during the show's CC and SF runs - the rights expired.

I actually find it odd that they lost Bloodlust, as I thought that film was public domain. I see PD DVDs of it in dollar stores all the time (interestingly some of the DVD covers mention Mike Nelson and Tom Servo in the "cast list").

Crap! I need to get Volume 1 now!
Volume 3....well I'm one of the minority that CANNOT stand Sidehackers, the only MST3K I couldn't get through in one sitting. Atomic Brain is one of my favorites though!

Well, I ordered Volume 1. Hopefully there'll be no nasty little recall accidents before it takes the path to my door.
