I thought Joel leaving the show due to problems with Jim was common knowledge. I’m sure that it’s been mentioned by other members of the cast in past interviews. Yeah, I thought so too. I mean, it's interesting to hear Joel actually say it, but it didn't seem that new or shocking to me.

A good read. Interesting that he ignored the RiffTrax question. Wonder if Joel feels slighted by Mike using "his" idea. So we've confirmed both Josh and Joel were pushed off the show by Jim, and that was the main reason for leaving.

Isn't this interview the first time Joel has officially said that he left due to Mallon and not "burnout" and being uncomfortable in front of the camera as stated in the Satellite News FAQ? www.mst3kinfo.com/mstfaq/wbrains.html

It wasn't a bland interview. I thought him not knowing where K01-K03 are and his speculation on Rhino's pricing scheme were very interesting. And it's always nice to hear from Joel.
But I am very disappointed in his refusal to answer the question about Rifftrax and company. He'll answer questions about Mallon but not about those guys? At least Nelson, Murphy and Corbett were good-humored about the CT launch. I love Joel and his style, but really.
It seems like this entire group is mired in personal baggage that undermines the good-natured personality of the original show. Beneath the friendly, happy-go-lucky visage of MST3K dwelled some fairly serious personality conflicts that created a split that's just as alive today as it ever was.
I obviously don't know the whole story, but everybody in the old MST3K crew seems to hold some serious grudges. A tragic flaw that continues to rob us of true MST to this day.

[My two cents] Don't let's all read too much into an unanswered question. All we really say for sure is that we don't know what Joel thinks about RiffTrax because he hasn't said. Why he didn't answer the question, or what he would have said if he had answered it, is purely speculation. And, frankly, fan speculation tends to be somewhat inaccurate. [/my two cents]

Agreed. I've always considered myself a pretty knowledgeable MSTie, and from all that I've read over the years, I was under the impression it was roughly an even split between "issues" with Mallon over show direction and burnout as host and of MST3K in general. This is the first time I've ever seen it explained like Joel felt he had to leave the show and that deep down he wanted to continue the show. On another note, I've started to get a little disappointed in Joel's business, uh, attitude, I guess. I don't like how he never brings up other riffing efforts, i.e. Rifftrax. And I'm starting to get tired of him mentioning "original MST3K cast," and "buy it, won't you?" in every communication I see from him. It's starting to give me an ichy I'm just here to shill my product kind of feeling. I know, I know, they're a small startup and they need all the exposure and money they can get, but still--that's how he's starting to come off as to me.

Ya see? he's playing with us and starting the whole CT/RT rivalry thing that Bill was on about. That or he doesn't like it and doesn't want to be rude. I think it's quite a leap to presume Joel and Mike don't get along because of this. I don't imagine their best buddies phoning each other every day and camping out in one of their back gardens while telling ghost stories but there doesn't appear to have been a problem between the two. A lot of posters at Slashdot seem to think he means Mike but then they also don't know what Kevin Murphy's up to and what the Bots cartoons are!

I thought Joel leaving the show due to problems with Jim was common knowledge. I’m sure that it’s been mentioned by other members of the cast in past interviews. It is, but it's always been presented that Joel left directly because of the bad blood, not that he gave up his precious MST because he feared that the bad blood was going to ruin it. That's a tragically different spin in my mind. Plus it makes me want to join the anti-Mallon club for the first time. Yeah, this is the first time we hear a tinge of regret in Joel about the whole thing, and that he kind of lied about his having other things in the works, just to make his leaving look better. Although we already knew, from a Frank interview last year, that Joel left to "save the show" because, as Frank said, staying would have torn it apart. That's how bad it got!

Joel is seriously the ONLY member who has said nothing about Mike's ventures. Trace was asked, Frank was asked, Mary Jo did one, but Joel has stayed interestingly distant. What it means, what it doesn't mean, seems to be left up to the individual, because the man just doesn't seem to want to comment, which is cool, but interesting. (Can I just stop saying"interesting?" Sheesh! :

That was a pretty good interview though I don't really care for the "just let anyone ask a question" approach overall. Not that I mind being democratic about it, but you tend to see the same questions over and over with variations on the same answer.
The bombshell answer is the big news, yes, but it's not that surprising. These people are all incredibly talented and creative so it's not too difficult to imagine that when they butt heads it happens in a royal fashion.
As for the rifftrax non-answer. Anybody else remember that article with Trace awhile back, (he was still with AFV) and the interviewer asked him what he thought of it? He gave a kind of non-committal answer that he hadn't heard of it or seen it (at that time) and when it was explained to him he was like, "Oh okay." It's sort of like asking John Lennon what he thought of Wings or Paul McCartney what he thought of Ringo's All-Starr Band. It doesn't involve them, so really why should they think of it at all? It's a former co-worker's new project. That's how I look at it anyway. It's really a non-issue. And to me the non-answer addressed that.

I don't know, there was a rumor that Mike said he asked Joel, but his call was never returned. Joel not even giving a "I haven't seen it" answer is kinda weird. There is a reason behind him not answering, the question is why?
Has Trace ever given an answer on why he left the show recently? It's rumored Jim pushed him out as well.
BTW, I now think I officially hate Jim Mallon for pushing Joel off the show. He ruined the perfect thing. Granted he had a good backup plan, but the Joel era was MST3K. I still know people who won't even go near a Mike episode.
