I'm now becoming a fan of hockey since there's no Cleveland team, only Columbus, but since they got swept by the Red Wings...Gooooo Pen-goo-ins! The enemy of my enemy is my friend. Welcome to the fulfilling world of NHL fandom. And good for you for not choosing the dark side. Although I can't imagine any sports fan in Ohio cheering for a team from Michigan. Of course, crowfan is from Chicago and cheers for the Packers and the Red Wings... I come from a city where Pittsburgh is frowned at....At least in football.

At first I thought I'd come here and be gracious in my opponent's defeat. Then I remembered that most of the Red Wings have multiple rings already, and the organization has won 4 of the last 11 Stanley Cups. So screw that.
I loved watching the Red Wings lose. And cry. And leave their home ice in shame. I laughed out loud when the shot went off the crossbar. I gasped when I saw Lidstrom line up the last second shot, and jumped out of my chair when Fleury blocked it. I loved imagining all of those smug and entitled fans leaving the arena with their unthrown soggy octopi still crammed in their shirts (pants).
I thought maybe my schadenfreude had gone too far. But then the home fans started booing through the trophy presentations*. (You stay classy, Detroit.) It made it all the more fulfilling to watch Mario and Crosby and Malkin hoist the Cup while standing on that pompous "Hockey Town" logo.
With apologies, love and respect to Mitchell, crowfan, and Truck Farmer, this Obvious Troll had a great night last night.
*Upon further reflection, they were probably booing Bettman, but it was bad timing, nonetheless.

I thought maybe my schadenfreude had gone too far. But then the home fans started booing through the trophy presentations*. (You stay classy, Detroit.) I was EXTREMELY embarrassed by this. I thought it was horrible and classless. It's the first time since '95 (The "who cares" chants when the Devils were being introduced) that I was embarrassed to be a Wings fan. I guess with all the people that have left Detroit in the last 20 years only the uncouth morons are left. (I have a right to be upset about it, Detroit is where I was born and spent my youth. I've always maintained that Detroiters were in a stand-up class all their own.) Congratulations Detroiters, even after government bailouts, you've found a way to be thankless on a national stage. Pitiful.

After reading my previous post, Mrs. Atari asked me, "Isn't it better to celebrate when your team wins than to gloat when your rival loses?"
She's right, of course. But when your favorite teams are the Broncos, the Cubs, and the Avalanche, how often can you celebrate wins? So instead, I live vicariously through the teams who might beat the Raiders, Cardinals, and Red Wings.
I am a sad little man.
For what it's worth, I think Nicklas Lidstrom is the best defenseman of my lifetime. He's classy and plays the game right (like Yzerman before him), and deserves every accolade and success he's achieved. When I saw him get the rebound with 2 seconds left, I was sure the game was heading to OT. I even rewound the DVR of that shot and went frame-by-frame. Not just because it was an exciting ending, but because I was so sure Lidstrom would make that shot and I couldn't believe he didn't. Tremendous ending.

Is there a place that I can buy a Pen-goo-ins shirt?
