^^^^ I kind of agree. I think I'm starting to lose interest; I think they've kinda changed direction and would like to be known as a hip, live comedy troupe which is fine if that's your thing, but I'm not sure it's mine.

As someone who really took to CT much faster than RT, this is REALLY disappointing. I have enjoyed almost all of the dvds CT has put out - imo, the last five have been very entertaining - and I thought they were on a roll when they suddenly pulled this "live show only" crap. And it's not even a case of getting to a live show in my case - when they played in Boston, I was less than an hour's drive from the theater they were performing in. I just couldn't afford to go at the time due to being unemployed, and even if I had the money, I hate the drive into Boston! Having a post-MST riffing project involving Joel at my fingers, in the comfort of my own home, was more than enough.
As far as any TV project involving CT, I would certainly give it a chance. But considering what TV producers, channel programmers and executives look for these days, I'm doubtful as to whether Cinematic Titanic would fit anywhere on any channel. The first two that come to mind would be relatively new networks like Ion or RetroTV, who may look for a built-in audience of some sort, but even those possibilities are iffy at best.

I wonder if the time and expense required to put out DVDs is more than they are willing to invest. As a small operation I expect most of the work fell on the Titans. In fact I have some proof that is the case: There was a problem with one of my early orders. Instead of sending an email, I decided to pick up the phone and call. Had a conversation with a nice gentleman who promised to rectify the problem. As I usually do, I asked his name so I could note who I had dealt with. It was Trace. The regular shipping person had some sort of emergency and he was filling in. I did manage to stammer out a couple minutes of hero worship before ending the call. I imagine he found having to handle that (shipping and my stammering) quite a drag. I'm with you guys that will likely never have a chance to see them live.

Understood and a neat story about Trace. I don't want to seem insensitive because I do want them to succeed, which is why I patronized buying every title to this point via the download option. As I've posted elsewhere here, I don't expect them to keep the TV schedule, 22-24 eps a year, somewhere in the 7-13 range would be acceptable. And from April 2008 to April 2009 I did download the first seven, I realize that "Oozing Skull" was available on DVD release about six months prior. All I know is it feels like a holding pattern lately and I've been checking out RT more. Fact is Mike, Bill, and Kevin really didn't take as long a hiatus and it feels more familiar to me now since they were the last lineup on SciFi.

It looks like the next release will be live, that's what Sat News is reporting...
The Cinematic Titanic Panel was held at the Tivoli Theatre on Friday as part of the St. Louis International Film Festival, and first the news: The next Cinematic Titanic DVD release will be EAST MEETS WATTS, recorded during of one of their live performances. The idea is to give people a taste of what it’s like to be at one of their shows. The exact release date for the DVD hasn’t been finalized, but it will probably be sometime within the next month or so. Check back with Satellite News or the CT web site in the coming weeks for more information.
I wonder, will it include all the opening bits? I'd like to own Frank's Convoluted Man song.

This news makes me sad inside. I mean, all the evidence has pointed toward this happening for a while, but I was still holding out hope that we'd get a good old fashioned studio DVD. I'll certainly check it out (as East Meets Watts is the only one of the newest batch that I haven't seen), but I'm very skeptical right now about how this is gonna work. :/

IMHO, East Meets Watts is the perfect one to record live. And I say that because the nature of the film, their treatment of it, and the audience reaction. (I hope they use the Chicago performance -- I was in the audience and they were right on!)

...ugh... this is extremely disheartening... I just read it on the Satellite News and I'm none too please, to say the least. Like many other lovers of the studio DVDs, I was holding on, praying and hoping they would continue to do the studio DVDs... but, as much as I love Joel... he seems extremely stubborn and uncompromising. The majority of fans WANT the studio DVDs... maybe its not financial feasible, and that's fine... If it works, then great, but I have little faith in this. I compare it to live CDs versus studio CDs for my favorite musicians. Sure, the live CDs are nice to have, but when you want to rock, you pop in the perfection of a studio album! I will buy East Meets Watts, and if the viewing experience sucks on toast, then I will never buy another Cinematic Titanic DVD again. This project seemed so promising, but after them not releasing any new material for so long, and then this being the result of what they finally decide to release--well, I will just have to walk away from this fiasco. I like most Rifftrax stuff--especially when they do old cheese (like the new Maniac release coming out soon). They continue to release consistent stuff, and pay attention to what the fans want. You can't please everyone all of the time, but you can at least listen to the damn majority, and Joel just doesn't seem to give a Schlitz what anyone wants. I will just stick with Mike and the gang, since Joel just doesn't seem to get it...

I can't see this format experiment as Joel being stubborn or not caring about the fans. It's been so long, and they've changed their story enough times, it seems more likely they're having to compromise in order to get a DVD out at all.
This live format could suck, or it could be really cool. Either way they still make me laugh, so I'll keep an open mind about it. If we don't support them now, there may not be another recording - studio or live - period.

After seeing how well the Rifftrax Live event was done (and was done - live!) all my doubts about this sort of thing disappeared.
And if it's much more feasible for the Cinematic Titanic project to continue in this way then I'm all for it.

I just wonder if they'll keep up with the "locked in a bunker, unable to leave until X number of movies are riffed on for posterities sake" premise continues. I love those bits...(robots roll in from left, turn around, dejected, etc) Maybe "Those In Control" of the Titans deemed a Live Audience necessary, and so the opening/closing bits culd remain?

From MST3K.COM:
"For those of you disappointed that it’s a live release, you might be surprised. I’ve seen the rough draft, and the way it’s been done is very inventive. Hold off on assumptions until it’s released. I myself am a big fan of the ‘Studio Recorded’ releases, but I was impressed with this production. RAD"

I'm just happy they're doing some kind of DVD release. But I have far fewer concerns after seeing the live RT Plan 9 event.
