I like how every update from Joel now is a quick update with a promise of a larger one to come. I think Joel may have some inadequacy issues.

Latest update shows off photos from the live events, and also confirms Rebecca Hanson as Gypsy. It also drops another bomb, apparently Rebecca is also playing a Mad this season in addition to Felicia and Patton. He promised to go into detail later, but who knows if that is before or after the episodes drop.

That'll be nice, I think. More female characters in the show is a good thing, and a comedy trio can allow for some scenes that don't work as well with only two people.

And we'll once again have someone who's playing characters on the SOL and with the mads.

Liked Joel going into the thinking behind the changes with Gypsy. Although we love the character 'as is' the changes are totally logical.

I love the old Gypsy. I even had a cat that was named after her (she was put to sleep a few years ago, but she lived about fifteen years).
Something I always assumed about her being voiced by a man that Joel didn't really dive into was that back when the show as created and everything was a "hands on" group of guys that got together and couldn't really venture very far outside their group for a cast, so Gypsy just kind of fell on one of them. It still wasn't much different in the first season when Jim took over, and by the time Patrick voiced her I assume it was just a default tradition.
But the character being a dim witted female voiced like a man? Yeah, I can see how that looks bad in retrospect.
I've been something of an advocate for more women being on screen if/when the show gets rebooted. They've been supremely underutilized over the show's tenure, with Mary Jo being the strongest presence. Rifftrax proved that she and Bridget have great chemistry together. And while I don't venture into Rifftrax Presents all that often, I find Janet Varney really funny. I've been a fan of Felicia for a while and know for a fact she's going to knock the role of Kinga out of the park, and am glad she's not the only female presence onscreen. I'm also excited by the prospect of Rebecca riffing as Gypsy, because I'd like the diverse silvery of a female riffer in the group.
This news just makes me more excited.

I never thought of Gyspy as dim witted after the one time they shut down everything on the SOL, (and Joel took a deep breath) so Gyspy could get some things off her chest, and she spoke more eloquently. The "higher functions" thing was probably hard to work into the host segments often enough without sounding forced. And as the movie demonstrated, she's a better driver than Mike.

The one thing worse than women drivers is Mike.

Yeah, the "dim-witted because she's operating the ship" thing was a handy excuse to use to justify it, but as Joel says that's not really a sensible thing to say with the state of modern computing and isn't necessarily something that should be leaned on just because of tradition, even though I really like classic Gypsy.
I also didn't think of her as a very dim-witted character. ...but, keep in mind, my first exposure to the show was MST3K: The Movie, and my second exposure was Experiment 801: Revenge of the Creature. I was introduced to her after Joel's era, and by the end of Joel's years Gypsy was a bit more eloquent than she was in the earliest seasons. There's a definite character-shift between the Gypsy in season 2 and when she tries to figure out a way to save Joel's life in Mitchell.
My head-canon explanation for that's been that her hardware was updated over time (as it was with the rest of the Bots and the SOL) so she gradually had more and more processing power to use. That was never firmly said on camera (I think) but it made sense in my mind. And, really... it makes sense to me that those upgrades may well have continued with time, giving us an all-new sounding voice for Season 11.
But that's me wondering about other science facts, I suppose, so i'll give it a rest.

I always saw Gypsy being like a kid in earlier seasons, and bit like a teenager in the later. Kind of like her personality had to develop over time instead of being programmed into her. Even like that tho I never really saw her as being dim, but I did enjoy her more in the later seasons.
I really couldn't care if there are more women in the show or if it turns into a sausage fest, I'm just a bit worried Gypsy would have so many changes that it will feel like a completely different character- thus truly leaving out Gypsy. But I will continue to trust Joel with his decisions and I look forward to seeing how Rebecca handles the role.
And I see that a certain Waverly fellow popped up in the last update. When I first saw the mystery signature on the post card I thought it could be the voice for that character but now we know that's not the case. Maybe they aren't actually appearing in the show or they won't be speaking- or their voice actor just didn't bother to sign the postcard.

Remember that talk of celebrity cameos back during the Kickstarter? Maybe Waverly will be voiced by whoever's guest starring at the time.

We've got update sign!
The BIG NEWS: The live stream of Reptilicus (Joel confirms it's the first episode in the update) will take place on Thrusday April 6th, with a 24 hour streaming window for the episode on Saturday April 8th! (Or Sunday April 9th, Joel seems to have his day and date confused)
The early access episodes will be available STREAMING ONLY on Tuesday April 11th, and for download on Thursday April 13th!
I was hoping for more notice on the live streaming so I can request a day off, but I'm just going to have to hope I luck out.
He also comments on the trailer, asks us to stream the he'll out of the classic episodes on Netflix, warns us against piracy, and plugs Rifftrax.

(Or Sunday April 9th, Joel seems to have his day and date confused) The live stream doesn't happen Thursday the 6th, it happens either Saturday or Sunday (depending on Joel's typo). Thursday is just when he sends our account info. Joel "On THURSDAY, APRIL 6th, all backers invited to the livestream screening will receive a new VHX code through BackerKit, along with detailed instructions for redeeming the code. This will give you some extra time to make sure your VHX account is working. Then, on SUNDAY, APRIL 8th, at 12:01 am ET, your VHX account will be updated with streaming access to EXPERIMENT 1101, which will let you stream the new pilot episode as much as you'd like for 24 hours, until 11:59 pm ET."
