I wonder if they could put in a call to Jim Mallon and ask if there might be a box he missed in his garage or something?

I mean, there's no harm in calling him right? It's very possible that he could have kept it somewhere and it just got lost. Again, I highly doubt the thing was destroyed or ruined. Also, very interested to see what you and BoB3K are up to, Kolos.

Jim is very northern Midwestern. Reserved, not talkative. Guarded. Especially not around people he doesn't know. Listen to a few podcasts to see what I mean. I doubt if a fan calls him out of the blue at his therapist number he'd be in the mood to talk about that. Related, could you imagine having Jim Mallon as a therapist? Yikes. Best not to pester him. (I mean if you really want to, go ahead, but you probably won't get far)
And Bob's pointed me towards some KTMA first-gen VHS rips that are of MUCH better quality than the widely circulated DAP copies, I'm fixing to do some additional audio editing and upload them to YouTube as KTMA HD Editions or something.

Anything could have happened to k03, it needs to be remembered that it’s from an independent UHF station from back in 1988. I hope Jim Mallon had it, but it’s very possible it’s lost forever. If you want wanna contact him, maybe butter him up first, tell him that Blood Hook is you favourite movie!

Are these (1) the "MST3k guy" rips, (2) the "Cheepnis" rips, or (3) not previously bootlegged copies? Just curious, I have #1 and they're pretty decent to start, but supposedly "Cheepnis" has better audio. Would definitely love to get in on this.

I love all the KTMA eps, but honestly, I only watch the ones that aren't reriffed in Season 3. I was ecstatic to get 01 and 02, but watching them, the movies are fun, but the riffing was non-existent, even for KTMA eps. So, it was neat to see the first ever riffs, but as for MST3K experience, we weren't missing much. So, having said all that, I'm not too concerned with 03. It's a movie we've seen riffed, and after seeing 01 and 02, were probably not missing much else, other than those couple host segs, which I think at least one of has been released my Jim Mallon in his clip right?

Just to be clear, I meant Joel or Ivan or Jordan from Shout should call and ask, not a fan.

Google "MST3K season00" I don't know if the Torrent is still active, I'm getting them straight from Bob's Google Drive. I've checked the one I've seen so so far from Bob, K10-Cosmic Princess against what's on YouTube, and it's not those. The color is better, its got fewer tape hits and it's less cropped on the bottom, plus a bit better for resolution. Audio is good, but with a bit of VHS buzz I think I can get rid of. Not sure which copies cheepnis or mst3kguy use, but the torrent says it was put together using first-gen VHS rips, so these are probablyb differently sourced.

Some of those better transfers of KTMA were briefly on YouTube a few years back, around the time of that torrent, then promptly pulled.

I just noticed that MST3kguy used 2nd gen for most, so this is very interesting to hear. I also talked to a guy on Reddit who was sitting on some KTMA tapes he was gonna look at, I never heard a follow-up from him but now I think I will reach out and see if there's any word. (That's a no-go, unfortunately.) This excites me more than new episodes!
EDIT: I think I found them, but the original uploader specifically says they're "multi-generation VHS" in a follow-up post. Regardless, I found the same files at a private site, I can't believe I missed these before, I must've thought they were the MST3kguy ones that I already had. Thanks for the tip!

I'm curious about this, because the bootlegs I got at a con (pre-K01-02 being released) are not very good. I've been thinking about doing a chronological watch of the series, but I may hold off if better transfers are on the horizon.

These Season00 files are the MST3kguy captures lightly compressed. From what I understand, that means they are: K04 Gamera vs Barugon (4th gen) K05 Gamera - (2nd gen) K06 Gamera Vs Gaos - (2nd gen) K07 Gamera Vs Zigra - (2nd gen) K08 Gamera Vs Guiron - (2nd gen) K09 Phase IV - (2nd gen) K10 Cosmic Princess - (2nd gen) K11 Humanoid Woman - (2nd gen) K12 Fugitive Alien - (2nd gen) K13 SST: Death Flight - (2nd gen) K14 Mighty Jack - (2nd gen) K15 Superdome - (2nd gen + Final Host Segment!) K16 City On Fire - (2nd gen) K17 Time of the Apes - (2nd gen) K18 Million Eyes of Su-Muru - (2nd gen) K19 Hangar 18 - (2nd gen) K20 The Last Chase - (2nd gen) K21 Legend of the Dinosaur - (2nd gen)
I think there are people here who had the Cheepnis / Cheezyflix captures, which are not the same and are supposedly better in some cases (especially the audio). If anybody does have those, please reach out!

If Jim had clips of K03 on the site, it would make sense that he had the entire episode digitized. UNLESS he attempted to digitize it and the video tape was so badly damaged that it fell apart while playing, and THAT aborted recording was where he took the clips from.
I'm very curious about it, and it seems like we're not getting the full story. Could be that Mallon was only contracted to hand over his physical masters and either he didn't keep his own digital archives around (assuming he had a full digital archive of K03 in the first place; I would like to think he at least TRIED to preserve it) or he has a digital copy and is spitefully hanging on to it or wants money or something. That also doesn't make sense. So maybe my theory about K03 falling apart while Mallon was trying to digitize it holds up? Maybe they have half of K03 in the archives and are *really* hoping the second half will turn up as a fan recording or that a previously-thought-irreparable broadcast master can be fixed someday? All I know is they seem to be very interested in the idea of a fan recording existing.

If Jim had clips of K03 on the site, it would make sense that he had the entire episode digitized. UNLESS he attempted to digitize it and the video tape was so badly damaged that it fell apart while playing, and THAT aborted recording was where he took the clips from. Right Mallon confirmed having copies of the first three episodes in a July 2008 interview with Satellite News. The clip from it went on MST3K.com the next year. So it's definitely true that he had at least a partial high quality copy of it in 2008. The K01 and K02 clips he released at the same time were in the same impeccable quality. So from that I would assume that all three episodes were processed the same way. Another quote from that interview stood out to me though. Yes. We’d like to put some of them up on mst3k.com. Because of the age of the tapes and the format, though, we need to find a facility to help us make the Quicktime files. 3/4” machines regularly ate the tapes when the format was new. I would hate to have that happen now. So I don't know anything about how likely destroying a tape really is but if there's any truth to that NDA brought up in the kickstarter thread my guess is that "BBI" (whatever form it was in at that time) contracted with someone to digitize those tapes and an error occurred as K03 was being captured ruining the tape. There's actually a shred of evidence to support this. One of the host segments Mallon released is clearly the opening host segment. The theater clip is from early on about 10 minutes into the movie. It can't really be determined where the other host segment fits in the show but it clearly wasn't the end segment. I don't think Mallon or anyone else is knowingly holding a copy that they're not willing to share with the current owners of the MST3K brand. In the increasingly less and less likely chance that someone did record it way back then and has held on to it all these years that person clearly isn't a fan of the show and I don't think there's much real possibility of finding that person.

Given the state of the masters of some of the later episodes, it seems possible that the master was already partially damaged, and that they just hadn't noticed it until 2008 when he was digitizing it. I don't get the impression anybody over there would be watching the KTMA episodes all that regularly.
