So -- this isn't "the end of MST3K," and they've got "a lot more news abrewin'." Based on that, plus the upbeat tone of the message, I'd guess that another season of MST3K is in the works. But if they're "starting with" an announcement about the live tour on June 1, then we probably won't hear anything about a new season before then. So I guess we have at least another month and a half to wait. You should read more Joel posts. They all sound like that. I think that he would couch an incoming asteroid with the same type of language.

We just got a kickstarter email from joel, which is mostly spam about another kickstarter, but at the end he does say and I quote-- "our next big announcement on June 1 about the future of the live tour."
Which sounds like good news for the live show but possibly bad news for the series.
I agree, it would be nice if they taped and released the live shows. I don't love live shows, but they're not bad, a change of pace from the normal show. Although I might like a live MST3K less than say a live RiffTrax or Cinematic Titanic as MST3K is an actual show with characters and plots and just feels right coming in a packaged recording and no audience. I mean, they are trapped in space, and there are no live audiences in space....and if there were, they probably couldn't hear you scream.

Season 12 was very rushed and not very good IMO. And to me, that shows that they really shouldn't be worrying about getting out seasons more frequently if that's the quality they're gonna have. --I dunno about the rushed quality as I didn't watch past the first ep as I was very disappointed with the movie choices and the format change-- But, that is sad as everyone here was hoping the shorter season would do the exact opposite and give the show time to breath and flow. Is it possible that part of rushed feeling was this whole (stupid, dumb,obnoxious,follow-the-heard,sigh) idea of a season being a single binge watch?

While we're on the subject, has anyone figured out what stuff growler and Waverly are made out of? While they may be 'based' on some real things, they are made by computer design and 3d printing. Joel went on about it during the Kickstarter. (honestly a little much in comparison to what other behind the scenes stuff we ended up getting.) I'm also guessing that the new SOL is completely 3d printed, and of pretty boring models at that.

One reason I'd like to see them do an older B&W movie ... "The Devil Bat", a Bela Lugosi movie that's perfect for MSTing, only runs 68 minutes. I think the average running time of a Roger Corman movie from the 50s/60s is ~70 minutes.

Unfortunately it seems like Netflix is not 100 percent behind the show But, But, they were behind it enough to 'suggest' a bunch of format changes and movie suggestions in return for six whole episodes. Incidentally, coincidentally, prophetically(?), the same number of eps that CC ordered in their final fleeting interest for a season 7. I really hope if this doesn't pan out with NetFlix, that Joel just pursues independently making eps a few at a time, with a smaller budget--(like not shot in LA, shot all at once old school production style, etc., less famous mads (although I would miss Kinga and Max, one of the better additions to the reboot-er-return)) and sells them ep by ep through Shout! or something -- and, of course, goes back to the original format as well.

... "Netflix Reboot Syndrome" where everyone (read: fans, critics, the show's creators and actors, Netflix) takes it for granted that the project in question is just *not* going to be anybody's day job. All the actors, writers and creative-types in general seem to have their own projects they are devoting actual time to with the Netflix project just kind of getting penciled in over a week or two. Everybody bangs out their pieces as fast as possible wherever and whenever they can over that period (often miles apart from each other) and then the editors come in at the end and Frankenstein it all together in post. It's no skin off anyone's back if it doesn't succeed... This is actually a REALLY good analogy. I've never thought of it this way before, but I completely agree. Yes. perfect. Although, I'm not sure how much of it it has to do with Netflix per se. That was pretty much the plan before Netflix was involved. And, I think it's kind of odd. Joel never really mentioned during the kickstarter (not that it would have changed my pledge or anything), asking for multi millions of dollars, that this was going to be a weekend shoot that everyone was going to pencil in. Compare that to the original run of MST3K -- it was their job, they did it full time, week in week out (at least during each season). It was what all of them were doing for a pay check AND for their creative focus. And I think you can really tell with the final product.

How are the Gauntlet host segments any different from the Sci-Fi storyline segments, other than the fact that they're actually easier to jump into when viewed out of sequence? I don't know, I haven't watched any but the first ep. On that first ep, the (ONLY) two in the middle were just fine. But the intro and ending were awful, not even sketches, but lame promotion of the rest of the season, as I said two posts ago.

That Turkey Day thing that has been a big part of it over the decades and is one of the more important dates in its history says otherwise That's so clever how you've completely proven my point. MST3K has made a tradition of taking MULTIPLE RANDOM EPISODES from DIFFERENT SEASONS EVEN and showing them back to back on Thanksgiving with some special for that occasion, not tied to the actual eps, bumpers. It's not a binge watch, it's a marathon. They've been doing them for decades, and one of the main parts of a marathon is that you don't have to watch it from beginning to end, you can jump in and out any time you want. The eps can be in any order, can jump from host to host, whatever. There is one exception, and it's the TDay version of Night of the Blood Beast, which actually has a set of host segments that are within the ep. And that STILL is a single self contained ep.

The shorter times are bad news. My big fear is part of the "binge-watching" "stream-lining" is that they're actually going to cut whole host segments, as in there won't be cold-open, intro, 3 mid-movie, and outro anymore. That would be really sad. I don't think we'll have to worry about the opening or skits, you're reaching a bit far to get that fear.
Hmmm, or [very sadly], I was exactly right. I watched the first new ep. I hated it. That movie was obnoxious, not funny-riffable. But more importantly, they've ruined the format, haven't they. Not only did they cut a host segment (and the bumpers!), they turned the opening and closing segments into nothing more than an introduction/commercial for the rest of the season. WTF! I don't want to know 'what you're going to do this season'. Just show it. I will tune in to each episode (maybe not even in order) and they will tell me what movie they're watching and then watch/riff it. Do they do this through the whole season? MST3K is not a damn binge-watching show. It is a show-by-show, we picked (got forced) a movie to watch, here it is, here's some fun jokes and skits around it kind of thing. There is no order to MST3K. Total crap. I might be done with the 'New MST3K' after all this.

Not sure what that means. I don't know if a distributor can ask for their work to be "hidden" from public view, or what. I can see them accepting requests to not show info until it has been released publicly, and this info has in no way been officially released publicly.

...it's not so much pessimism as it is a reaction to most of the Season 12 news, which after a Season 11 that I ended up liking really quite a bit, just keeps coming up short in so many ways.

I don't recall ever seeing him. Maybe you just saw regular BoB3K standing next to Diet Kolos and got confused.

I'm also disappointed in Joel either way, as he touted almost non-stop about how this new version backed by the fans would be totally free of "corporate meddling" and it seems to me that here we are right into the first group not backed by a kickstarter, and bam, we have "network" interference. lame.
I also don't get all this stuff about naming seasons and season arcs. Wasn't one of the few things that almost ALL original MSTies agreed on was that the Season 8 story arc--while maybe having fun segments ep to ep--was a bad idea. NO ONE tunes in to MST3K for an ongoing story, they tune it to watch a random cheesy movie with some funny riffing friends. period.

I would love some Supermarionation movies. I really like eps KTMA1 and KTMA2 even though there was like 9 riffs in the whole movie (full disclosure I like almost all of the (non-redone) KTMA eps cuz I really enjoy the moderate quality / made-for-tv / tv-b-star-starring movies along with the hang out riffing style) I agree, set upgrades would be nice. I honestly wonder if it isn't part to do with the lighting as well as the bland 3d printed stuff. Anyway, considering Joel is out 'telethoning' for a season that's already done, it makes you think set upgrades are pretty low on the list of things we'll see. I do hope they at least add some dynamics to the SOL camera work. And, a little dutch angle to the Mads would be cool.
