This really makes sense for Netflix too. MST3K already has a tradition of having a marathon (aka binge) on Turkey Day.
I'm going to guess that at some point Joel is going to announce some sort of live viewing party/stream/chat that will run through out the day that people can join in on.

I think the main 'similarity' is both songs have singers that aren't very good singers and so are doing that kind of talk-to-sing thing that non-singers do.

Update--
One night during summer break, my daughter (10) was still up and said, hey let's watch an MST3K. So, I pulled up Netflix and looked over the list for something of some level of interest for her (we've already watched Reptilicus and Yongary). Cry Wilderness caught my eye--kid, friends with bigfoot, lots of corny but PG-rated action--so I started it up.
It was funnier than I remember the first time, mostly I bet because I've watched most of Season 11 at this point and know and am used to the new characters. Anyway, we fell asleep half way through, but a few nights later, she brought it up to watch from the beginning with the whole family--so plus wife and son (12). We watched it and everyone laughed a lot.
There was much laughing at--
- The characters laughing at everything.
- BANG!
- flare con
- the end song
Anyway, it's a kids' favorite now and they've rewatched it as much as Reptilicus and Yongary.

Your link doesn't work. I did go to their site, but I can't figure out how do do the free preview. When you click on their 'ashcan' link, it takes you to a preview of 'The Umbrella Academy'. Maybe the preview has expired?
Anyway, I'm not too excited about the comic. I like MST3K because I like to watch old cheesy movies with funny riffing friends, and occasionally take a break and maybe do something silly, often relating back to the movie at some level.

when all this went down in real time, it seemed like most of them were upset that Joel had started the whole project on his own without talking to any of them, and then only after it got funded and started did he start asking them to be part of it, making it clear what their role in things was going to be. This is my recollection as well. Both Trace and Frank had a few brief but bitter public comments on the reboot when it all first became public and the KS was going on. Frank has appeared to soften greatly since then; my personal guess is that he's made peace with it, but is also happy with what he's been doing. I think all of them have made up for the most part professionally as can be seen by the reunion gigs* that RiffTrax has put together over the last few years and also how RiffTrax even sells MST3K stuff alongside their own. ... *Frank in particular seemed to have a ball being on stage again and getting all the love from the audience. As for Mike, Kevin and Bill, they have RiffTrax and it looks like it is doing them all just fine. Kevin and Bill actually did come back for those cameos, but it looks to me like Mike just wants to be the face of RiffTrax and is happy with that, and I don't blame him. I have my own mixed feelings for Rifftrax over the years (varying from elated, to in love, to growing disappointment with riff quality), but will always give Mike total props for keeping riffing alive during those dark years of the early 00s.

I'm sure the original reason for the voice of Gypsy is because back at KTMA the show was essentially Joel, Josh, Trace, Kevin, and Jim. Actually I think Gypsy's voice was originally done by Josh doing some terrible inhale voice. Then they switched over to Jim some time in season 1. As for replacing Jim, once you've established Gypsy as a character with a male falsetto, you replace with the same.
As for character voice recognition--47, you should go read some of the other threads, there is much discussion there. Jonah and Tom are definitely too close, but as you watch you start to differentiate a lot from delivery, as Torgo said.
To make a joke I've done before, it's relatively easy to pick out Tom's lines because you come to realize that if it's one of a few bad impersonations or a flop of a line, it's very often Tom. He does this one particular delivery where --he-says-the-line-very-fast-kind-of-at-a-higher-tone---and-then-ends-it-at-a-looower-tone-holding-the-last-few-words-looonger. I don't really care for it at all.

If we're starting a Gypsy pile-on, I agree that the character felt lost. I also think it's a fine idea to cast a woman in the part, but she should have tried to voice it as a character in some way. I dunno, probably was the writing too. Like they didn't want her to be a clod or a ditz anymore, but then had no idea what else to do.
I also think that pretty much all of her in-theater riffs fell flat, mainly because you were too busy wondering were the riff came from. If there was any action in the film you may not have even noticed her drop in, and then you're wondering about where the riff came from, realized its from Gypsy, and then before you really had time to process the riff itself, the fast-paced season 11 riffing was already off to more riffs.

I feel like some Economics 101 needs to be addressed before we blow this out of proportion ... Excellent post. I will always like Joel, but I don't like the spin he's put on this pledge drive. Honestly, they just shouldn't call it a pledge drive. It's just merchandise pre-ordering for the new season. Which is fine. They whole 'pledge drive' thing to me, comes off a little sappy, cloying, disingenuous, i dunno.

So, man, that's some pricey stuff on that Pledge drive. And that's coming from a guy who pledged a big $1K for the actual Bring Back KS.
I doubt I'll get anything considering I don't need discs, and the downloads come out SIX MONTHS after it hits Netflix.
...
Oh, and I'm a little late to the 6 eps news discussion, but I'm in the camp of that's fine if the quality gets higher. I will say though, I would love to see two releases a year if they're doing groups of six--and calling them 2 parts of one season. In fact, my one big complaint is organizational/catelog-related-- If they start releasing 6 eps at a time and call each one a season, we could be up into seasons in the high teens after only releasing another 30-some eps. That's kind of silly considering that during the golden age, seasons 3-6 had a whopping total of 96 eps in 4 season. Even the relatively short Sci-Fi run of 3 seasons had 48 eps.

Meh. It seems to me that for every cool thing Netflix does they do an equally obnoxious thing.

Too crappy of a movie for me. Had that sleazy instead of cheesy RiffTrax vibe that I don't care for. Still fairly watchable as the new riff crew is so solid.

Hey wow cool updates! I'm really surprised after ALL of the "MST3K fans are SOO important, this is what MST3K is, we wouldn't be here without you" stuff we heard during the kickstarter campaign, that I'm not hearing anything about this from KS or anywhere really except from the pro MST3K stalkers on this forum.

I like Diet Kolos cuz as long as he's around, I'm not the most pessimistic poster. I can go both ways on this news. I for one like slightly better movies. I've always said that I like to watch 'cheesy' movies, not bad movies. Movies that I might watch myself anyway on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Having said that, I tote's agree that I am not excited about hearing about Netflix vetoing things. One of the biggest things Joel preached about on his KickStarter telethon was how the funding would keep the show in the hands of the creators and the fans and the they'd be free to make MST3K the way they wanted. ... ... Now having said that, if Netflix being involved gives them a bit more money and time to smooth out some of those wrinkles from last season--like the rushed feel to most of the host segments--I guess then we would be back on the good things side. I will say though, that if you just look at the actual comments, there really isn't any proof per se that Netflix is trying to control the show, just that they're making requests for movies with some names attached. I for one quite like it when there's a Hasslehoff or a Donald Pleasence or a Jack Palance or even Joe Estevez in my cheesy movie. And it makes sense--it makes it much easier to promote a show about watching old cheesy movies with well known actors in them than a movie created by a fertilizer salesman and starring no one.
