I put up a thread over in the reboot section, but to throw in my 2 cents over here--it does seem a little low key this year--two years ago there was the Kickstarter and videos and hoopla, and then last year was a little more straight-forward, but still centered around the new show, with Joel and Jonah doing fun segments and of course promoing the soon to come new season. This year--a single press release with no details other than that it will have host segs from Joel and Jonah and Felicia and that the eps will be 'never-before-seen on Trukey Day'. Now, the highly optimistic could say that this is because they are all busy preparing for big things, but, well I'm not the highly optimistic type. Prove me wrong Joel! (Oh, I did just find a 'promo' for the marathon on the youtube page. still pretty low key, just the mst3k love song music over 30 secs of clips from previous years... www.youtube.com/watch?v=ten9zXkCPkY)(Awww...if you look in the video suggestions side bar, there's a clip of the '94 Turkey day with Adam West, RIP)

Name drop: My dad co-produced KTMA telethons with Jim Mallon in the late 80's Wait, so Jim Mallon co-produced telethons with Troy's Dad's Dad? ... Yeah, I guess I can see that. Seams a bit old though. I mean I can see Troy's Dad, but Troy's Dad's Dad?

Well I just got an email, and also the AV Club has an article, announcing this years Turkey Day. The only specifics they give is that it will have new intros by Joel, Jonah, and Felicia, and that the six eps have never before been shown on turkey day. That's it. Not even a hint of 'and also news about upcoming stuff,' or 'and exciting announcements.'
Color me officially worried.

I just did some googling, and it looks like it was about Nov 10th last year that they announce Turkey Day '16. So, we're not yet behind schedule this year for new announcements.

Man, you just have to look at all the merchandise they've started up in the last couple months to think there's no way Joel, Shout!, and the rest are gonna let this just end.

I haven't checked in in awhile and just did now. I'm still not in that much of a worry mode. And I still think there are many ways for Joel to get another season out without Netflix.
Having said all that, I think the big obvious date at this point is Turkey Day. They've been doing the new ones now for what 3 or 4 years? I'm sure they'll have one this year regardless of how well Season 11 is doing seeing as how Shout half owns MST3K now. And seeing how it is only about 5 weeks away at this point I expect an announcement about it any day.
Now, if we get to Turkey Day and there is no announcement of a Season 12 being funded or the start of a Season 12 kickstarter... Well, then we are in trouble.

DAP was awesome. I've had a 'complete' MST3K set since around 2004 because of them. I remember watching the KTMAs and most of season 1 for the first time back in the mid 2000s. It was glorious.

Hopefully it's the one I didn't see! Says everybody who saw one of the two. Well, I didn't see either, and I have no interest in seeing another riff of Eegah, so...

Fun fact-- this is the first Internet Forum I ever joined. The show had just been canceled not too many years earlier and I had just found DAP and had started watching some of the early episodes, including KTMA which I really liked a lot even to this day. That's been over 13 years ago now!! As others have said, it's hard to post new thoughts on a show, even if it's your favorite, for a decade. I do still watch an ep at least every few weeks. And of course I watch all it's children -- RiffTrax, Cinematic Titanic, ICWXP, QuipTrax, ect. BUT, here's something really cool--between then and now I had two kids, and now they're 11 and 9 and I've watched a bunch of MST3K with them--mostly the Gamera's and Godzilla's, but lately we've been breaking into some of the 50s sci fi, and more of the Sandy Frank's. I can't tell you how fun it is to watch them laughing at what SAMPO could be or singing "They TRIED to kill him with a forklift!!" And just recently they've started putting their legs up on everything. And of course, now I'm back for the new season, which I think Torgo very judiciously and accurately described. I am TOTALLY in the camp that the new age internet interactions stink AND that NetFlix stoopid season dropping and binge watching really stink and it sucks that so many people have already watched the WHOLE new season. I just watched Avalanche a few weeks ago and loved it. I'm in the middle of Beast of Hollow mountain now, and it's okay. The name I remember the most is Phantom Engineer, but then he hardly posted in the main forum even back in the mid aughts. I think he still posts a lot now, just not in the main forums. I also remember some Monster somebody who got all on my case once because I said I liked ICWXP a lot and refused to acknowledge that they 'ripped off' the MST3K format and should be shunned, like almost all entertainment isn't about copying and reformatting and evolving.

(and if you disagree, consider this: would you watch the movie on its own? Maybe. Would you watch the commentary on its own? Probably not). Well said, great way to put it. I've always said my ratio is 40% movie on its own cheesy fun, 40% riffing, 20% host segments / characters. I know that's not everyone's breakdown, and some, even many, seem to love movies so terrible they just suck so we can all laugh at them. I've always like the movie to be watchable and the riffs to play along with the movie. I've always loved running riffs like "They TRIED to kill him with a forklift!" It really isn't even a joke if you hear it outside of the movie, it's part of the movie watching experience. Another favorite example -- Big Stupid (instead of Vix Dugan or something?) They wonder about it at the outset, and then by the end of the movie, that's just his name. I see some glimmer of that in this season, but as DK says--too many set up / stand up jokes. Although, as I say, I'll take those any day over an abundance of 'this movie sucks, hey that scene sucked, what a dumb line' jokes.

I just watched Ep 4 and posted over in that thread, but for "MST3K: The Return" General Discussion purposes, I'll repost this part here:
Okay, I actually took a longer than normal break between ep 03 and [Ep 4]. (The plan was 3 weeks between eps.) Honestly, I just wasn't enamored with the new show. I mean, it's very well done, but it's kind of hollow. I think someone on this board gave a perfect analogy--it's kind of like watching a really good cover/tribute band. I mean yeah, they're very good, but they're still just imitating the original.
Anyway, I finally sat down for this ep and BAM. It was great! Partially because the movie is Grade A perfect mst3k material. But also, I think I've just had time to let the new crew sink in. Honestly, as I watched many of the funny host segment my thoughts were---Tom and Crow are dead; but MST3K: TNG is here and it's funny and it's good. I laugh at pretty much every exchange of Kinga and Max. And, their movie riffing skills (not including variations in delivery speed and bot puppetry) are really top notch. Compare this to when I watch a RiffTrax and I'm sometimes literally rolling my eyes and/or groaning at the 30th dick joke or 'this movie sucks' joke of the episode.

One strange thing is to come on the board and there's not much to talk about any more. It's only been out a while, but discussion has slowed after an initial burst. In regards to new seasons/episodes.... I know that's the way TV viewing is today, and I'm not complaining. I like being able to watch a season (of any show) at my leisure. But it does alter the water cooler aspect. I remember how it was when a new ep would air, and the next day at work we'd all gab about it, or I'd go on a forum and that would be the conversation of the week (that, and what was coming up next). I admit I miss that part of it. Today were all watching at different speeds: one viewer is on ep 2 while I'm at 14, and not really into talking about ep 2 anymore. Yep. Stupid NetFlix and bingeing. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I don't know why anyone thinks its a good idea. A Netflix show comes out and you see posts on blogs reviewing the whole season. And then if people really love it or hate it, maybe another deeper post or two. But shows that come out by the week like Walking Dead or Game of Thrones, you have posts every week reviewing the ep and praising the good direction the show is heading or bemoaning the bad direction the show is heading.

A heckler interrupted them in DC and they responded. The riffs aren't prerecorded. 1) Oh okay, that's cool. 2) Really, a heckler? Odd, you would think MST3K shows would be almost exclusively filled with MSTies. Unless you mean less of heckling and more of an overzealous fan 'adding' to the show.

I was disappointed that the riffing for this one seems to have been pre-recorded, though the host segs were live. Seriously? I know we all love these guys, but if that's true that kind of sounds like a false advertising and asking for you money back level of disappointment.

Oh also.. I think I'm having more trouble digesting the movies than I used to. A lot of these new eps are "okay" but the movies themselves leave me so cold that I don't quite get up to MST3K speed like I used to. Perhaps with a second viewing, when I can appreciate the riffs more. Right now I keep gagging on the movies. Wow, if you don't like these movies, don't even think about trying out some RiffTrax VODs...
