i'm 4 episodes in and i can pick jonah's voice out now. i think the big issue with baron's servo is how he's kind of all over the place. when he's just delivering a line normally i know it's him immediately but he seems to be doing way more voices (impressions, singing, etc.) than either jonah or hampton. i think that might be the reason why others are having difficulty telling them all apart, combined with the way they recorded the riffs and silhouettes separately (which makes it all feel disconnected).

Okay, to clarify, because I think despite my best efforts something still got muddled here. In the second scene of the theatrical film, there's a light instrumental version of the theme playing while Mike exercises and the credits roll. This track is apparently the background music for the Blu-Ray menu screen. If you could make that track available, on its own, I would be very grateful. I don't think that instrumental appears anywhere on the Blu-ray. What they did put on it, over the bonus features menu, is the full vocal version of the theme that was made for the movie and intended as the opening at one point, but scrapped in favor of the one you're looking for. An instrumental of this version can be heard over the end credits.

if Joel/Mike/Jonah & the bots were running around saying "I got gypped!" in the sketches or during the movies as a joke then they would have an actual case for their concerns. the naming of "Gypsy" the 'bot is just unfortunate.

To be fair, Rhino's print did leave out the spaghetti ball bumpers during the movie segments (they had a strange habit of doing it prior to Vol. 4). I wonder if the master tape deteriorated over time like with Lost Continent. The Gizmonic Insitute bumpers, actually. They almost never cut the spaghetti ball bumpers. Is it more so the master tape possibly being worn out or the way it was transferred/digitized for the reason why this new edition doesn't look so hot?

Those screen shot comparisons make it look better than it actually does in motion. The Rhino DVD is much sharper. The Shout! DVD uses the same transfer that's up on the Vimeo On Demand site (that version has a lot of blank space left in where the commercial breaks are supposed to go for some reason). Before Vol. 3 was re-released I made a custom DVD of the digital version (with the blank parts edited out) and that looked really similar to the official DVD.

The picture on Pod People is probably the biggest fault with the set but they at least tried to patch up that one spot (the thing that bugs me in particular is that they also left out the last commercial break bumper despite leaving all the others in, although I have an idea why they cut it. I mostly got this just for Angels Revenge since it has unique bumpers that are missing on the Rhino edition). What was the reason they left off that? Is it seen on the VHS copy? I'll now have to look at it sometime. In the full episode, they show the same part of the movie twice where Tommy and Trumpy leave the house before and after the bumper (we even hear two different takes of Joel saying "John Bonham, Moby Dick"). I guess Shout! didn't think it was necessary to leave both takes in so they cut the bumper and showed just one of the takes. As far as I know it's not on the VHS either (the Rhino DVD cuts this out too along with three other bumpers). You can see the completely uncut version on Shout's own streaming service to see what I mean (start around 1:25:40 in): www.shoutfactorytv.com/mystery-science-theater-3000/mst3k-pod-people/550afe3469702d3fab381a19

There is indeed a cut there. Rhino cut a bumper out in that spot (and in at least three other spots throughout the episode) and since that line was so close to it, it cuts out very abruptly. And this isn't the only episode that's like that either! If you've got 10 bucks to spare you can buy the episode from the Vimeo On Demand website, or rent it for a mere $3 right here: vimeo.com/ondemand/mst3k/122454728 (oddly, the running time is about three minutes longer since a bunch of blank space was left in where the commercial breaks should go) or I could just PM you a link of an upload of the show (I'm sure I can't just post it right here without getting in trouble). Thanks for the info lho! I might get it from cheesyflix, I don't feel like editing out the dead spots. Save
I'm not so sure that's the best alternative. I bought Sidehackers from them a while ago and it had the bumpers missing as well. While that's the only episode I bought, I kind of get the feeling that the episodes that came out on home video earliest might all be sourced from the VHS or DVD releases put out by Rhino and not fan recordings as they claim (not 100% certain, just a hunch).
How important is it that you get these episodes out in order? I can't guarantee that Shout! will re-release Hellcats on DVD anytime soon (I'm wondering what they'll even do with the 5 or 6 or so individually released shows that are still OOP) but maybe you should just hold out and see if they eventually do so?

When you get to City Limits can you confirm whether it begins right on the opening theme or if there's anything before the theme (ie. slate card, "Turn Down Your Lights", maybe even something else entirely)? Thanks.

I would love to see a review of this set. Specifically, is the video/audio quality better than the original version? I am wondering if I should double dip or not... Also can anyone confirm if they fixed the corrupted section of Pod People? Really hoping they took care of that. It's been fixed. They must have spliced it in from an uncorrupted source but it's not completely seamless. I looked at it really closely and could tell that the framing is different since the silhouettes shift a little bit down where the corruption was (and only for that section). I skimmed through the rest and I can't say it looks all that good. There's a fuzzier look to it with damage in some spots, just looking really worn out. The Shorts disc looks really fuzzy too. Cave Dwellers isn't quite as bad but not great either. Angels Revenge is the only one I've watched all the way through and it's definitely the sharpest looking of the four. I only noticed a handful of tape hits, nothing that I would consider too distracting (but I need to watch it more closely next time). If you own the Rhino set but are considering getting the re-release for, say, the MST Hour bumpers (which look pretty good), maybe wait until you can get it dirt cheap somewhere down the line. I'm personally okay with it. The picture on Pod People is probably the biggest fault with the set but they at least tried to patch up that one spot (the thing that bugs me in particular is that they also left out the last commercial break bumper despite leaving all the others in, although I have an idea why they cut it. "This Is MST3k" would be a killer bonus (makes me wonder if there's any red tape to prevent SF releasing it). There's that sequence where they show a clip from Colossal Man unriffed and then the same clip with Joel & the bots.

The first whole episode I ever saw was Robot Monster on Netflix about five years ago. Well before that I had seen the Gumby/Robot Rumpus short on YouTube which I thought was the funniest thing ever at the time. I don't think I knew about it as a kid when it was still on TV, but I developed a vague idea of what it was probably from being online as a teen. I had also taken a slight interest in notoriously bad movies, so it seemed it would be a good outlet to check those sorts of movies out. I knew I had to check it out at some point, probably without realizing there were DVDs available (that I wouldn't have been able to afford at the time I bet).
Months after seeing Robot Monster, which just left me confused, I finally looked up an episode guide and started looking for other episodes that were streaming and saw more from Season 1. Then I wised up and jumped ahead some and started to "get it". The first episodes that I actually liked were probably Eegah, I Accuse My Parents and The Girl in Lovers Lane.
