Either of these clips on youtube? You can watch the full episode on cbs.com. The part where they actually watch the bits of Manos is about 18:30 into the show. Love the use of "Thirteen" during their date, too. The Manos clip was also uploaded to youtube: www.youtube.com/v/sbX4OA_RaPI

I have no idea...I've always been curious about the circumstances of how the found KTMA episodes were found. I know there's a few websites where the owner says that he found several of them (I forget the name at the mment).

"Santa Claus Conquers the Martians" is great, as is the movie. Manos was one of the first episodes that I saw, and personally it got me interested in the show.

and sent emails to all the newspapers in the Minneapolis area, seeing if anyone would be interested in a little story about some British TV nut searching for these lost episodes. That's actually a pretty good idea, the problem is that you would have to get in contact with a reporter who not only has enough free time to deal with the article but also is interested in it and thinks that it will sell. If you keep pestering various newspapers you may eventually get a positive response. Actually, I think it would be far more efficient to send TimeCop Abe back to 1988 and have him record the episodes, then bring them back to the present. Sure but do you have a time machine? Another interesting thing I found a few days ago is a site called mst3ktemple.com. They have a really interesting section called "What do we know about the MST3K Pilot and missing episodes?" That section can be found here: www.mst3ktemple.com/ouch1.htmlYeah his site is really amazing, I've always wondered how he managed to get so much information by himself. It seems as though he got some type of help from someone, but maybe he really is just that fanatic. As for the audio/video clips that are available, I believe that all those clips were released officially through BBI.

It is possible though, that K01 could have been taped. One of those instances of "I'd like to see the premire, but I won't be home, so I'll record it." then it getting lost in the underground gremlin layer of recordable tapes. Since K01, and K02 aired back-to-back it is very likely that if someone wanted to see the premire they'd have recorded the first two episodes. Most likely the recorder wouldn't have been overly concerned about saving the tape forver and it wouldn't be in SP, but SLP is still perfectly watchable, espically for this type of thing.

I'm not going to rule the finding of the missing 2 episodes at some point, but remember VHS tapes fade after a while. I have several in my collection that are pretty faded from the early 80's. My point is there isn't a whole lot of time left to find the missing episodes before they are completely unwatchable. I assume part of the degrading of vhs tapes is how well you take care of them. I have a few tapes from the same time period that are still in very good condition. And I also love seeing the commericals on any old tapes that I've actually saved, it's always funny seeing how commercials have changed.

Reading davy1031's link above, that seems to be how the last close-encounter with K02-K03 happened. Personally I think we should email the two people at the bottom of my link. I tried contacting tservo4 over ICQ (with the number listed at dap), but he doesn't seem to use it any more.

In any event I doubt they will ever surface but I would love to be proved wrong. Just watch, they will...even if I have to make them do so myself. After all, I am the king

The first two are really unlikely (who's taping random UHF shows on Thanksgiving?). K03 I can see. Someone caught the double-feature of K01-K02 and thought, "Cool. I'd better tape the next one in case I forget." Really, I think that'd make the first two more likely to be found. Somebody is a fan of Joel's, and they hear the ads for the show (or just hear the ads and are curious), but they're having thanksgiving dinner with their family, so they can't actually watch it during the broadcast. So instead of actually watching it, they set their VCR to record it. Then you just have to be lucky with them having saved the tape.

One thing I remember him saying also was that he used to post here at this very message board a few years ago. I think that's an obvious gesture that he was lying. If he had the missing ones, wouldn't he post about them? Not necessarily, I'm sure everybody's heard the story about Ted Dean posting that he had K02 and K03 on Deus Ex Machina's Tape Trading Post back in 1997 as it says on MST3K Temple. However, if you look at DAP Central's forums, the poster TServo4 claims that he has contact with Ted Dean and was close to getting the episodes (of course this was back in 2002), and then if you go to his website (http://web.archive.org/web/20020314025014/http://www.mst3k.cc/articles/missing/) he has a post from Ted Dean who claims that he had sent out a few copies of those two episodes to some people, but the episodes were of really horrible quality so he "temporarily" stopped trading it. While I agree it's pretty unlikely that this is true (it makes no sense that no video or stills have popped up on the internet in all these years), there is a tiny chance that it's true and the guy at the bookstore got a copy or he got it some other way and he just never felt comfortable bragging about it to a whole board of people. Anyway, you should just go to the store around opening when it should be pretty empty and you'll have some time to talk to him. It's worth checking out a little more...

It's definitely worth following up on it. I wouldn't go as far as saying he was lying (unless he was acting crazy or something like that), most likely he does have some KTMA episodes, just isn't actually aware of which ones are missing. You can always just call the store, and ask to talk to him, I hope you got his name.
Anyway, keep us updated (no disappearing!)

A lot of the continuity goofs are done simply for the comedy affect that they have on the show. This is my favorite continuity glitch, copied from mst3kinfo: In [K05], Joel said that he "raided the movie library" and found "the original Gamera," giving the impression that he, Joel, decided what movies they watch. I guess the show never explained it, but if you want to make up something it's very easy to think that the mads realized that they couldn't conduct the experiment properly that week, since both of the bots were broken. So they let Joel pick the movie one time. Or another similar explanation. Or they made him say it, for some bizare reason. Or Joel was speaking out of character (he's done that during KTMA, hasn't he?)

Not to be contrary, but I'm just wondering if there are people out there who genuinely consider watching Manos cut up into 10-minute chunks in a postage-stamp sized window on the Internet to honestly be a reasonable substitute for watching the glorious high-definition DVD of it. On the one hand I certainly don't endorse piracy of the stuff released on DVD, and I'd never disseminate anything like that myself, but OTOH I'm not really sure having Manos up on Youtube is doing the show a lot of harm. For one thing if a new potential MSTie who hasn't seen it before wants to get a feel for the show, Manos _is_ one of the better episodes. Anyway just my two cents. Of course some people would, but the smarter people would just search the ed2k network and find the dvd rip that's there.

I don't know. What direction would it be, funny like MST or serious like L&O? The only possible way it could be funny is if Lennie Briscoe was still around, and sadly Jerry's gone now. The L&O regulars would still be serious, but the MST3K cast would still be acting as though it was a comedy (including their lawyers, witnesses, etc.) You could even have one of the voices of the bots being the judge.

Probably, it would make an interesting crossover, and very interesting episode. Try pitching it to NBC.
