It's pretty real here in South Dakota.
I'm "lucky" enough that I primarily telecommute to my office about an hour away, and we just put our weekly in-person staff meetings on hold for the time being. But, being a newspaper reporter, there are still public government meetings going on that need to be covered, emergencies that need you present and a host of other situations you have to show up for.
Governor has called off school through at least the end of the month. Century theaters in the largest city in the state have been shuttered. The state high school boys and girls basketball tournaments are cancelled. Heck, all spring sports are on indefinite hold. Concerts, public works like museums, all shut down. Festivals are off.
I live in a town of about 1,500. I finally found some toilet paper in one of the few grocery stores around here after about a week of watching for it because I wasn't one of the barbarians who cleared the damn shelves like a maniac.
I guess one thing that's good for us is our population density. We have less than a million people in the 17th largest state by land area (or roughly around there). It's like a combination of Dances With Wolves and Field of Dreams - lots of space between everything.
Everyone better settle in for the long haul. This is going to have a bigger impact on life now and into the future than 9/11, and that's saying something.
We'll make it, but it's gonna be a drag for a long time.

Robot Holocaust. Think about it. This is what the robots have been waiting for. Also, I'm guessing it's been awhile since everyone here has watched it, so get in there and show a little season 1 support!
Also Space Travelers. Three guys in a confined space breathing with limited air. And Hackman. I don't know how this isn't considered one of the greatest eps of all time.
Anyway, all eps are good for passing the time while we weather the storm. It's strong tonic in these times.

I was hoping for official confirmation one way or another before commenting, but yeah, this seems about like about the best choice they could make. He has old school horror cred and has shown he can handle the big budget blockbuster. And he made a flat-out classic in Spider Man 2.
Honestly, I can take or leave the Evil Dead series, with the exception of Army of Darkness, which is a blast. If I had to pick a Raimi movie I really liked off the top of my head I would probably say The Quick and The Dead, but I'm one of the few on that one, I suspect.
I certainly don't know Raimi's motivations, but I have some guesses. First, they may have just handed him a blank check and said do it our way. It's possible, anyway. The other thing may be that they were messing with Derrickson's script (was Cargill writing the new DS as well?) and he wasn't down with it. I believe they have a new screenwriter now, and if Raimi only cares about how he'll incorporate his style of horror into the plot, not necessarily the overall plot itself, I could see him coming on board.
I was going to stick with this movie regardless, but this is really interesting.

Between Ratner and Singer the X-series hasn't had the best of luck finding directors of sterling reputation. Singer clearly has his own issues but Ratner seemed like a creep, too. The only cast member I remember beinng enthusiastic about working with him was Halle Berry, for whatever that means.
I was never a huge horror fan, but I get what Derrickson wanted to do and was open to it, at least. It has to be frustrating for him. It seems he was kind of stuck doing an origin story to introduce an unusual character, did a great job and produced a highly enjoyable movie, and then saw him develop under different directors after his movie.
It can work. I loved Johnston's The First Avenger, and I really like him as a director, but the Russos came in and knocked it out of the park with Winter Soldier. I don't remember the timing being this bad, though.
I don't know. It sounds like a big mess. Again. And I doubt they'll come crawling back to Derrickson like they did with Gunn. Very different circumstances.

I hear you, but I had thought of Reed before you even mentioned it. Come to think of it, is Ratner free? God help me, that was a joke.
At least they didn't let Derrickson get halfway done making it and then give him the boot, ala Solo.

My big fear is that they Peyton Reed it. Reed was fine for Ant-Man, but Doctor Strange demands somebody with a vision and not comedy sense. With less than a year and a half for development, Multiverse of Madness could be in trouble if its date doesn't budge. And if they do push it, they might as well have kept Derrickson. This sucks. This was the phase four movie I was looking forward to the most. And they're saying the movie will still commence shooting in May. That sounds like a recipe for serious trouble. I haven't heard any rumors on who will replace him, but I'm getting worried. And now that you mention it, I hope they don't actually get Peyton Reed, since I don't think there's an Ant-Man movie on the docket right now. Like you said, he was fine for that series, but for Doctor Strange? Definitely not so sure. This is bumming me out.

We have a lot of useful movie threads, but no "Coming Attractions" or something similar for upcoming releases, outside the Comic Book Movies thread. If we did I would likely have posted this there, as I don't really think this movie needs its own thread, but what the hey.
They're finally making a sequel to Top Gun. Whether we needed one or not is another question. But since it's been over 30 years since the original, I'll give them a pass. The first one was enjoyable enough, especially for the time. If you grew up in the 80s, you saw your fair share of the flick.
The aerial photography looks spectacular. It will probably be a real thrill on the big, big screen. I guess we'll see how the plot and acting go, but I'm interested.
One thing I do want to get off my chest. I enjoy watching reaction videos of people watching movie trailers for the first time - yes, I have no life. I get a kick out of it. But almost everyone I watched reacting to this trailer were going ape about how Tom Cruise is doing his own flying. These aren't even really Cruise fanboys/girls, but they are just so into Cruise flying in those trailer scenes.
The thing is, he's not.
A simple Google search reveals that he did fly some aircraft in the movie - civilian aircraft. He's a licensed pilot, and I believe he flew a helicopter for some scenes in one of the Mission: Imposssible movies. That's great! But he does not fly the F-18 Super Hornet, nor any other in-service military aircraft in TG:M. The United States military expressly forbids civilians from flying military aircraft, and unless Cruise enlisted and I didn't hear about it, those scenes showing him doing that fancy stunt flying are him as a passenger looking like he's flying or CGI trickery (i.e., him flying a smaller, non-military plane and then making it look like the F-18.)
I mean, think about it. Some of the operational details of the F-18 have to be classified, and they're not letting non-military personal take the controls, no matter how charming they are or however much Chinese money the producers offer.
I'm not knocking Cruise, here. He's a dedicated filmmaker and does go all-out on his stunts. He makes damn entertaining movies. I'm more annoyed that people don't take a little time to actually look into what they're talking about. I mean, come on. Do you think the U.S. Navy is letting Tom Cruise fly one of their F-18s? Do they have any idea how much those things cost? No way, no how they let him fly one.
Anyway, I feel better. And I still want to see the movie. Carry on, all.

Looks not bad. Has a bit of a CA: Winter Soldier vibe with the political thriller side of it. Curious to see what David Harbour will bring to the whole thing.

#34: Jojo Rabbit - Taika Watiti's latest is something of an absurdist comedy about propaganda and "drinking the Kool Aid," as it tells about a young German boy who aspires to be a Nazi soldier but discovers his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in the walls. It's one of the funnier movies I've seen in a good long while (big props to Sam Rockwell, Rebel Wilson, and Watiti himself as Hitler, who are all fabulous), and I found it quite touching in spots. The way the movie trasitions from idealized fantasy to bitter reality as it goes is fascinating, and Jojo's relationship with the Jew girl in his house provides and excelent transition tool between the two. This could be my favorite movie of the year. From everything I've heard about this one, it intrigues me. And I gotta admit, it's as an original concept as I've heard in a while. I've read a bit about how this one is flopping, but to be honest, I didn't even know it was coming out. They could have used a little stronger marketing push, if you ask me. I'm not a Charlie's Angels fan, really, but I'd give it a chance. Now here's one that did the promotion right. I've known about this one for awhile and it sounds great, right up my alley. It's nice to see Bale in something unmasked/down to earth. Great story that seems built for a movie. And I like how Damon described his fight scene with Bale as "nothing like if Jason Bourne fought Batman." This is one I'd go to the theater for. Interesting reviews as always, Torgo.

While this show remains inconsistent, when it's on, it can still be pretty good.
In regards to last night's episode: how is it possible that my hate/fury toward Negan has been steadily eroded over the last year or so? I still can't forgive him for what he did to Glenn and Abe, but they've almost got him to the point where he's a sympathetic character.
Some of that may have to do with the introduction of Alpha, whom I don't hate with the same passion, but I'm scared of her more than I was of Negan. And she put more heads of our friends on pikes than Negan bashed in with Lucille, including Henry's. I can't say for sure, but it seems like Negan wouldn't have done that, even before his "reformation." We also know Negan does not like rape, which seems to be almost encouraged in Whisperer society.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan is a lot of fun to watch as an actor. I got tired of the Negan schtick for awhile, but he's been really good this season. Watch him when Aaron tells him it was his fault his wife died. Watch him when that kid talked smack about Carl (while getting the story wrong, to boot). I thought that guy was a grease stain on the ground right there. Really some nice, intense performances from Morgan this season.
When Rick decided to "let it go" with Negan, so to speak, maybe I should have as well. Of course, Maggie may disagree with that. But these days, if I have to side with Negan or Alpha/Beta, I'm going with the devil I know. I don't know if he stands a chance against them - his former power was drawn from the strength in numbers and loyalty of the Saviors - but it should be interesting to watch.

These membership deals sound pretty cool. I might even consider trying one if my closest theater weren't 45 minutes away (AMC) and the best theater an hour away (Century). Would be great being able to wander in on a day off and only have to pay for popcorn.

I realize it's not a direct parallel situation, but I guess I should have been expecting this after Disney reversed course on the whole James Gunn firing thing. Didn't think that would ever happen, either, but it did. But at least the MCU will still have Spidey in the fold.

Yeah I joined when there were just over 6,000 members, and it was probably just after the show switched to Comedy Central. They must have requested some fan addresses for promotional stuff. Very cool little item, I'd say
