That is really cool. Just curious, was there a reason you got mail from Comedy Central? Was it through your cable provider? I used to get mail from Best Brains but I don't ever remember getting anything from Comedy Central.

Keep an eye out for Exit 57 at the end, featuring a VERY young Stephen Colbert. Man, I've been trying to remember the name of that show for a decade or more. Whenever I'd try to figure it out I'd keep running into The State, and I was sure that wasn't it. Might have helped if I remembered Colbert was on it. Thanks for mentioning that was on there. Behold the power of commercials in MST3K recordings!

That had to be the weirdest g*ddamn spam I've ever seen. Next it will be "we're your number one source for heroin" or "we traffic in the finest human slaves."

It's funny. I used to tape MST3K and obsessively edit out the ads. Now I would absolutely LOVE a complete set of MST3K episodes with all the commercials left in. I've thought about organizing a campaign to collect every original broadcast recording that still exists, but I don't have the time! Thanks for doing this! I did this too, and I wish I hadn't. I eventually stopped doing it because I'd pause and wait for the show to come back on and I'd forget, cutting off part of the show. Ended up appreciating the commercials after a few years. Live and learn, I guess.

I don't think we can call it dead in the water, but I'm definitely curious. Netflix is not in an awesome spot right now. They're dealing with more competition than ever before, and now Disney is going to drop their catalog (and the newly-acquired catalog from 20th Century Fox) on their own streaming service exclusively, as ProjectedPaul pointed out a few pages back. That's a real gut punch. Netflix tried to shore themselves up with some great original programming (MST included), but they're going to take a considerably hit when Disney launches, and shows aren't cheap to produce, even a modest one like MST3K.

Not sure if I should be surprised or not, but man did that seem like a tenuous arrangement to start with. Spider-Man has been one of the best parts of the MCU since his introduction, having him yanked away from that sure seems like it will throw a wrench in the narrative (I haven't seen Far From Home, by the way). They just got a ton of characters back with the 20th Century Fox deal, now they lose one of their most popular. It's a shame. I don't blame Sony. I get it. But it's hard not to feel like they dropped the ball on this.

The difference here is it's a name. A name that some people actually have. No one is walking up to those who are named Gypsy and suggesting to them that they should change their name. I guess I'll go burn all my Stevie Nicks albums... Fair point, for sure. The mascot analogy is not a perfect one. With mascots, the name represents members of the student body in their athletic and other endeavors. Often we're talking about public schools, which are taxpayer-funded. That's a way different thing than someone's personal name, which is what we're talking about with Gypsy's name, even if it is a fictional character.

This thread is trending toward Observer's Brain territory, but what the heck.
There are no great arguments when it comes to this subject. Whether those of us in the United States think of gypsy as a general term or a reference to an ethnic group really isn't relevant. It is a reference to an ethnic group somewhere, and whatever the intentions were when Gypsy was named, I think it's prudent of Joel to at least consider the criticism.
Now, obviously, as a fan of the show and Joel since the early 1990s, I know he did not name Gypsy with offensive intentions. Gypsy is a beloved character. Friendly, caring, maternalistic. And if you don't think of or know the term as an ethnic reference, it's a cool name. And it's been used in many other places and by other people besides the name of a character in a puppet show.
I do think this is coming from a hyper-sensitive social media viewpoint, but it has valid points. Over the last couple of decades, Native American references have been generally, quietly, removed as high school and college sports mascots. This was a relatively big deal where I'm from, as many, many area high schools had mascots like Indians, Braves and Bucks. I genuinely believe the supporters of these mascot names when they say they believe it's a sign of respect and strength to use those terms as mascots, but when you reduce an entire ethnicity to a team name, you better have a pretty good argument as to why people of that ethnicity shouldn't be sensitive to it.
Especially with a term like Bucks. That was short for Buckskins (a term they changed to Bucks after earlier criticism) and the school gym was adorned with a mural of a Native American in full headdress. They eventually changed their mascot entirely to the Bucks, as in "male deer," and replaced the mural with a 12-point deer buck. The girls teams were changed to Gazelles, which is weird, because it's an entirely different species.
And really, is there anyone who doesn't think Redskins is an offensive term?
Now, to be fair, if we're going to go by this yardstick, the Minnesota Vikings should probably change their name, as should the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, but nobody seems to complain about those. If it's the principle of the thing, then it should apply to all groups, not just those who speak up about their discomfort with the term.
In this case, I think Joel is damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. He certainly isn't going to go back through 200 episodes of the show to change the name (it's said and shown in every opening, for crying out loud). He's Joel. He's a sensitive person, too, and like he said, he never meant to offend.
If I were Joel I'd leave the name as is and welcome continued discussion. I know in the world of social media that seems like asking for trouble, but it's the high road, and it's hard to go wrong if you honestly listen and weigh the issue.

I can only really say he is awesome in Blade Runner. I know it's getting a little over-quoted with his death, but his last lines in the movie are..., I mean, damn. I'll have to look at more of his work.
Rest well, sir.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Hell. Yes. Doctor Strange II was pretty much confirmed without it being official, but I was still hoping for some kind of confirmation at CC. It sounds like they're going to use Strange to further develop the multiverse concept, which makes sense. It seems like there's a large canvass to play with there, and with Cumberbath and Derrickson both coming back, I'm definitely looking forward to it. As for it being the first "scary" MCU movie? That's fine, even though I'm not a modern horror guy. I think the last horror movie I saw in the theater was the Blair Witch Project, if that tells you anything. When it comes to horror movies, give me a Friday the 13th marathon of the first six movies and I'm good to go. I haven't even seen any of Derrickson's horror entries. And while I'm not banking on it, I'd love to see Tilda Swinton return in some form. She was such a great part of the first movie, and even her cameo in Engame was one of my favorite parts. Just her line, "Strange is supposed to be the best of us..." was powerful. She adds so much to this part of the MCU. Still, I'm looking forward to it! God what a long wait, though. Wesley Snipes is excellent (and underrated) in the first two Blade movies, but I'll definitely check this out. I don't know Ali at all, but it's a fun character, and one that could find his way into pairing up with Strange at some point. I'm not wild about casting from another Marvel property, but I guess it is what it is. Otherwise, I'm really curious about the Eternals. I know pretty much nothing about them, although they are connected to the Inhumans, right? I hear that didn't go that well on the TV side of things, but I never watched it so I wouldn't know. I like how the first slate of movies seems kind of disjointed. Kind of like the original Phase I movies were. A mishmash that may connect more clearly as the years go on. On another note, I did see Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse. I can also take or leave animated flicks, but this was pretty good. The little differences between universes was pretty cool. Was probably really good on the big screen, though.

Similar to On the Roof by Johan Lindell (if anyone here even knows what that is), an 80s new wave song has been gaining notoriety recently for being impossible to find. Unfortunately, it's also a really catchy song that no one can identify. Some people have speculated that it's from a B movie, possibly one from MST3K. So, does anyone here think they know what the song is? www.reddit.com/r/TheMysteriousSong/Are they singing in English? The sound quality seems pretty rough, and it's not very long. I like a good mystery, and though it sounds like it should be familiar, I certainly don't know what it is.

Just finished it up on Sunday. It was really good. Not as good as the first two seasons, but still arguably the most entertaining series on television right now. They pack a lot in, for sure. A few quick things: * Yup, some of the things in this series are a bit ridiculous. But then it is a show about a transdimensional threat, monsters and nostalgia.
* There are some great emotional moments. For me, it was the death of Alexi. Murray cynically tells him the fair games are all rigged, so when he plays one and wins, he has this moment of "maybe it's not all bad." He excitedly goes to find Murray and show him his stuffed bear and that he doesn't think the games are rigged. Then he gets shot. Oof.
* Speaking of emotional moments, Robin is awesome. The story she tells Steve about their time in high school is heavy, especially for the 80s. More of her, please. Had a great time watching this latest season. Wish it didn't take so long to make these things, but I'm patient. I'll be around for the next one.

I've tried a few Chicago-style pizzas in my day. Didn't really care for it, but I can see how some people would like it. I can see why Chicago style isn't for everyone, for sure. I really like both styles. As Joel said (paraphrasing) - "The truth is that both systems work equally well, it's really just a matter of personal preference."
