So I had 10 bucks at Hollywood Video to blow and this is what I managed to grab. The guy at the counter gave me a pretty weird look, I guess because of the diverse selection. Any thoughts on any of the mentioned titles? Which one should I watch first? Any that I shouldn't watch at all?

I found Bowling for Columbine to be very one-sided. The amount of bias on the issue at hand, gun control, is very biased. It tries to make the average American look like a moron. I hate Michael Moore. Fat communist.

I haven't seen any of the three. I did get to see a clip from Bowling that was a 3 minute cartoon about white flight into the suburbs and fear-driven gun ownership. And while I agree with the above sentiments about Michael Moore and his anti-American propaganda, that clip was pretty funny.

I hate Michael Moore. Fat communist. Servo Hee. Even though I may be more pro-Michael Moore than others (I never saw anything of his except for that speech at that award show and a little bit of his book), that fat communist comment was pretty funny. And I can relate to annoying anti-American people, for I have an uncle who is exactly like that. Him and his conspiracy theories. . .(chuckle) DO NOT HURT ME EMOTIONALLY FOR THE COMMENT I MADE ABOVE, PLEASE. |

I happen to love Michael Moore. His books are right on and hilarious. I do not find him anti-American at all -- in fact, he's one of the only people in the media spotlight that doesn't seem to think that questioning the wisdom of some of this country's policies somehow makes a person anti-American. I really hate that "my country, right or wrong" thing.  And I HATE Dubya, he's a lying scumbag. Worse than Nixon. Anyway, "Bowling for Columbine" is excellent. I own it, and have watched it several times. "Run Lola Run" is also great -- I only saw it once, but I remember thinking it was fantastic. And "Zombie," is that the classic Lucio Fulci flick? That rocks -- I love Fulci. I own that too. The scene involving the splinter and the eyeball is wicked cool. I guess I don't know which one you should watch first, though. Maybe start with the shortest one, or do them in alphabetical order.  |

That's all he's done all his career. The rest, I have no opinion on, I've never seen, but, Michael Moore is indeed Anti-Democratic, in a country that allows him to be. Hm, I don't know why he'd be considered anti-Democratic. And I don't think it's biased to simply state facts, even if the facts are unpopular ones. You're right, he probably wouldn't have been able to make the doc in China, but what does that have to do with anything? China is a totalitarian regime. We are a democratic republic that is quickly moving toward plutocracy. People are still allowed to question the government at the moment, and I think that's a great thing. It's what makes us different from China, in fact. Yes, I'm a liberal, but I'm very sensitive to bias from either side, and I didn't really see how "Bowling for Columbine" was biased. He stated facts that anyone can research (like the gun deaths in this country vs. gun deaths in other countries). When something was his opinion, he said so. All he was trying to do was figure out WHY this country is the way it is, WHY we have a really exorbitant gun death rate when compared to other industrialized nations. He explored different avenues and different reasons why this MIGHT be so. He didn't say anywhere in the film that "This is why." He just threw some possibilities out there. So he makes money off his books -- what's wrong with that? He's a capitalist, but he just feels (as I do) that corporations shouldn't be given carte blanche to run roughshod over the law and the American populace. If people buy his books and read them, great. At least some people are reading his books instead of those hideous ones by Ann Coulter, that screeching fantasist of the right wing who does nothing in her books but piss and moan and resort to ad hominem attacks (like "fat communist"). She never makes a single compelling argument for any conservative issue, she just pulls statistics and quotes out of her ass that have no basis in reality whatsoever. But it's still a free country. It's about hearing all sides. That's how we get to the truth. But that's neither here nor there -- sorry for the threadjack. |

Answer me this though? If he's just "stating opinion" as you say, why does he go and harass someone like Charton Heston? Hell, he's just the spokesman for the NRA, not the president. Not once did I see it mentioned that MM even attempted to contact the ruling facility of the NRA. But that's just one opinion. You know, he spoke of how most gun violence occured in urban, low-income areas. He also mention music, mainly Marilyn Manson and Ozzy, as I remember as I one viewing was all I could stand. What about the facts that most rappers rap about violence, rape, and drug dealing. That was never mentioned. He didn't go to the inner city and interview people, he stuck to the suburbs. Sounding biased now? What about the fact that he only talked to members of these militias and people directly involved in these tragedies he focused on, rather than talking to those that live in the communities these groups are based in that, from my research, are really unconcerned about them. And the cartoon about the evolution of America, oh the cartoon, he made Southerners, as well as others, look like complete racists throughout history. What about the facts Michael? The facts that the Civil War was over money and states rights, not slavery. Starting to sound biased? As a gun owner, for sport and protection, and a Southerner, who, at one point, dated an African-American woman, I was personally offended by the one-sided, biased, completely inaccurate viewpoint presented. And, yeah, you're right about the China thing, but, if you're going to use other countries pasts as examples to prove your point, shouldn't you examine those countries viewpoints on the issue in the past, as well as now?
But, that's just my opinion, and I'm gonna state it,

Uh, guys, politics by its very nature is always biased. Politics is always one-sided (which is why it doesn't mix with art by the way and I don't mean Pearl's Art) so I'm going to stick to art which, at it's best, is inexhaustable in multiplicity of meanings and contradictions, etc.
Anyway, as art Bowling for Dollars, uh, I mean Columbine is biased pap...I'd like to see Bush and Moore starring in a remake of the Incredible Two-headed Transplant...they deserve each other.
Run, Lola, Run is pretenscious and boring. Gives foreign films a bad name...(sorry, Emp.CupCake)
Zombie sounds cool. Gotta see that one...

Get your hands on a copy of the last episode of the Twilight Zone. It's a French production of the Ambrose Bierce short story about the American Civil War entitled "An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge". I lecture on this story at high schools from time to time and I use this as a visual. Haunting and very well made. Conservatives give me a headache. Feh.  Anyway, French films. Yeah, "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" is great -- I remember seeing it several times in school. Decidedly less great was "A Little Romance," which my high school French teacher forced us to sit through every year. I also liked "The Piano Teacher," "8 1/2 Women," the Blue-White-Red trilogy, and "Les Pacts des Loups" (i.e. "Brotherhood of the Wolf"). |
